It was a once in a lifetime thing for Applebloom (she should savor the memory, because she is not getting a real one), so she probably wanted to make it special for her. And, um, maybe "the yard" is a certain side of the school where games are usually played? I don't know; that bit was weird. Maybe Cheerilee has been walking the snowy road with Pinkie.

LOL! Cheerilee and Pinkie... Yeah, that's awesome. Although, I can understand if Cheerilee wanted to make it a special event, given everything Applebloom's been through to try and discover her cutie mark. But yeah, when you think of all the different spells and potions she's already tried to get a fake cutie mark (between this and having Twilight repeatedly zap her in Season 1), I can't help but wonder if her flank is too "damaged" at this point to generate a real cutie mark.
