Some of the episodes in Season 8 got me thinking.  So, the writers of the show still know that the main premise is to teach lessons, right?

When did Twilight find time to learn all that with her horn-warmer job?

=P

Remember, she didn't become Celestia's horn warmer until the end of Season 3 :P

Missing that "ei" in the corner of the screen, eh?  I just miss stuff happening for a reason.

Huh?  I don't see what you mean.

Where have you been? The show jumped the shark after season 2.

Actually, now that I think of it, not AFTER season 2, at the end of season 2. That stupid royal wedding episode. They had to ruin a great story about bodysnatching shapeshifters who feed on emotion with a royal wedding.

Yep, "A Canterlot Wedding" was the exact moment when the train jumped the tracks.  Don't get me wrong, there were still plenty of excellent episodes afterward: "Pinkie Pride," "Forever Filly," "The Cutie Map" (despite the naked plot contrivance), the Rarity Trilogy of Season Five, "A Perfect Pear," and some others.  The show is still good for what it is.  It's just that at that point in 2012 Equestria stopped being a coherent fantasy world and became a formless blob of whatever the suits want the writers to stuff into the franchise.

And, oh my god, do you remember Tori Spelling in the lead-ins during the first airing?  And it was scheduled to coincide with the actual royal wedding of some British prince.  Ill omens if ever there were any.

Season 1 had that little "ei" in the corner of the screen which meant that it was supposedly educational and instructional, which is what the whole letters to the princess thing was about.  They decided to stop adhering to the rules that allowed them to have that "ei" in Season 2 in order to have episodes where the characters do not learn anything, like "Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000."

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.  I guess I've noticed that, how some episodes have just been regular cartoon adventures, instead of trying to teach something, and that's fine.  But the majority of the episodes still try to have a lesson of some kind, so it irks me when the lesson is just blatantly terrible.  And that seems to be happening more frequently this season.  It's not even that the show HAS to be educational, but it's like they're not even paying attention to what they're writing anymore.

I wonder if that is because so many of the new writers are just hired guns without a lotta loyalty.  Back in the day there was a stable of regular writers, but now there are a lot of guys who are just being brought on for an episode or two despite having no prior knowledge of the characters or of what passes for a narrative now.  First-timers seem to have difficulty with making the characters act like themselves.  Hell, even Lewis and Songco had a rough first outing with "Castle, Sweet Castle" before settling in as, I would say, hands down the show's best writers since Meghan McCarthy got an executive office.

Maybe, but it also seems like common sense that if you're making a show primarily aimed at young kids, then it's a bad idea to make multiple episodes with a serious message that says acting like an asshole is the right thing to do.

True'nuff.  I remember how pissed off guys got over the questionable behavior of the Six-minus-Rainbow in "The Mysterious Mare-do-well."  Folks don't cotton to that sort of thing, although they mostly gave Pinkie Pie in "A Friend In Deed" a pass.  That was probably just because her song was so damn awesome.

my problem is similar as pointed out in a journal I made, the almost complete lack of punishment and the very hypocritical treatment of two characters that committed high treason, Discord and Cozy Glow.
Strebiskunk

The trouble with Discord is that he's so overpowered that you literally can't do anything to punish him short of retrieving the Elements to turn him back into stone.  So any time the writers start to say, "Hey, let's have Discord be really naughty like he used to be," you automatically write the other characters into a corner they can't escape without giving him a free pass because it's all or nothing with him.  There's also the matter of episodes like Break Up Break Down where he actually did something good that felt genuinely in-character.  But for some reason, the show can't be consistent with that.  It's a shame because A Matter of Principals had some really entertaining moments, but I'm really disappointed with how they handled the lesson.

As for Cozy Glow, I get the impression that you're referring to a future episode that may have been leaked (the only upcoming episode that I've seen is Sound of Silence, but otherwise, I'm avoiding spoilers), seeing as how her actions in Marks for Effort were dishonest, but not exactly high treason.  (still, it's hard to deny that, even without spoilers, EVERYONE thinks something's up with that character)

I didn't know if it was officially out or leaked but in the finale she turns out to be a twist bad guy like Hans from Frozen and tries to overthrow Twilight and is sent to Tartarus for high treason. and it makes me mad because Discord got a pass for high treason. and there are other artifacts that can nullify Discord's power.
Strebiskunk

Okay, now that the finale has aired, I've read your comment completely.  I won't deny, Discord's treatment is highly dubious, and I certainly wasn't a fan of how he acted in A Matter of Principals (and I'm assuming you're also talking about Season 4, when he betrayed everyone to Tirek).  What I'm assuming, if I reach with the show's logic, is that the main difference is how the two acted once their plans had been spoiled.  In Season 4, Discord showed that he had finally learned why his friendship with the ponies was important, and he also tried to help them stop Tirek.  In Season 8, Cozy got caught and basically told Twilight to go fuck herself while spelling out her plans to keep using the friendship lessons to become empress.

I am curious, though.  You said there are other artifacts that can nullify Discord's power.  Which ones?  I don't recall that ever coming up in the show.
krypto451

I was just assuming there had to be other such artifacts. and I don't care he was sorry, the Equestrian Justice system can't work on the "I'm sorry" system. and there are plenty of other times he's screwed his latest chance to be good, he's past his third strike.
Strebiskunk

That's a fair point (and also a big reason why I didn't like A Matter of Principals; we even started to see him do good things earlier this season in Break Up Break Down, so this just feels like he's going backwards).

there was also Chrysalis's throne that could nullify Discord's powers, there has to be more out there.

Ah, good call with Chrysalis's throne.  I had forgotten about that, probably because it had been destroyed.

and maybe you can give your thoughts on the debate I had on this thread, starting on the sixth comment on this page. https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/my-little-pon...

The list from TV Tropes referenced at the beginning comment you pointed out explains things pretty thoroughly, I think.  Though I did have some reservations about its statements about Discord's redemption (I tried to explain it with the show's logic, but I still don't like how A Matter of Principals pretty much ignores all of his character development because, as John de Lancie put it, "People like it when Discord's being naughty").  As I also pointed out, the episode wrote the characters into a corner because, unless someone finds a piece of Chrysalis's throne, we don't know of any other artifacts that can stop him besides the Elements of Harmony, which they can't use because they need all six, and Fluttershy has refused to use her element against him.

As for Cozy, I think it's interesting to consider whether she is too far gone that she might not still be reformed later.  But more to the point, the danger comes from the fact that she's already so good at manipulating others, it would be impossible to tell if she had genuinely changed later.  It really isn't even a matter of IF she can be reformed, or IF there are better places to keep her than Tartarus.  It's that her plan went so well that there are no better options.  (ironically, one thing you can say about Discord here is that at least his true feelings are pretty easy to read; he acts like an overgrown child while Cozy is more manipulative than most adults)
krypto451
6 years, 1 month ago
but because Cozy is a child, she was not the right example to use when finally not reforming a villain and the writers did it just to be subversive with no moral implications intended. and as I said before on that thread, other TV-Y ratted shows get away with the things I want kids to be taught, so, why can't MLP?
krypto451
and some people say it would be hard to tell if Cozy Glow could be reformed because she knows how to use friendship to manipulate, how do we know any of the other "reformed" villains aren't faking it?

and how come foal characters like the CMC and Diamond Tiara almost always get punished for their antics but the adult characters, both antagonist and protagonist, who should kno better, keep getting let off the hook?
Strebiskunk

I thought it was weird how all the "reformed" villains teamed up to save everyone in the Season 6 finale... Now it all makes sense.  They just wanted to stop Chrysalis so they could take over Equestria themselves in the series finale!  Equestria is flat!  The Pony Illuminati is real!  And they're putting chemicals in the water that turn the friggin' foals gay!  :P

Kidding aside, though... I've already admitted that there are times the writing could be better, and there are episodes this season that I didn't care for.  But you're pushing this so hard that I'm not sure what your goal is or how to respond.
krypto451

part of me wants to make sense of that double standard both for my own enjoyment of the show and so maybe I can stop worrying about what it might be teaching kids.
Strebiskunk

While there are some episodes that drop the ball with the moral, I think most of the time, the show does well enough to show the difference between characters who actually learn the lesson and try to be better vs. characters who are just rotten.  As for the argument that, "in real life, you can't just say sorry and get out of punishment," there's a certain point where parents need to explain to their kids the difference between real life and a cartoon (of course, a lot of parents are too lazy to do that, but that's not the show's fault).  Personally, I have many of the same concerns when it comes to the poorly-written episodes.  But I keep watching because I feel like the majority of the show is still good.  How you decide to handle it is something you have to work out for yourself.
krypto451

it's just that if it teaches morals, it has to be compared to real life and some of the characters get away with actual criminal behavior.

and for something that I'm almost certain won't be spoiling anything for you, Tempest from the movie is also a traitor but she got off scot free too.

I'm assuming you're just talking about the movie itself, in which case yeah, I've already seen that, so it's fine.

also, the comics acknowledge the existence of police and prison, so why can't the show do the same and show that there really are harsh consequences to some actions?
