So basically to summarize the backstory that's brought up here, it is that when both Sonic and Shadow were still kids they were best friends. They were mischievous and got into a lot of trouble together, by playing lots of pranks on authority figures. But one time, in the 7th grade they got suspended from their middle school; because of their said pranks. Shadow's father by then had it with his son's behavior, so he sent him to military school in the hopes that it'll straighten him up. With this news, Sonic thought he would never see his closest friend ever again... that was until his sophomore year in high school.
Shadow had suddenly arrived, but he was entirely different than before. He was now more well-spoken, intelligent, and actually serious. Once seeing him for the first time in 3 years, Sonic approached Shadow, but Shadow scoffed at him. He made many attempts after that, but Shadow never returned his "hellos". Because of their divide, a rivalry developed. Over time Sonic started to notice that a strange feeling in his stomach, that only occurred when he was around Shadow. To help figure out what it could be, Sonic asked his now best friend Tails for help. What Tails had told him though surprised him; he had a crush. Sonic at first denied this, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized it was true.
Making even more attempts to get closer to Shadow, they became sort of casual acquaintances. With the encouragement from Tails, Sonic decided to tell Shadow about his feelings on the day of their high school graduation. He went up to him, but he noticed that Shadow was around his group of friends. At the last second he let go of the idea of confessing his true feelings, and he let him go to Silver's for their own graduation party.
