I got the idea for it from the Hongi (the nose touching comparison is obvious, but it also has a special meaning). My high school included it as a welcome to first years during the PÅwhiri. Also been a few other times when I was visiting a Marae. I really like it as a greeting, its very intimate for strangers.
Only other comparison I can thing of is a hand shake where you pat each others back afterwards.

Would mostly be used among family but for special occasions (like bonding day!) or family gatherings only. But anyone attending the occasion would also get a nose bump. So Chani's already had hers from Sylvester =P
