Reminds me of an early JLA story by Gardiner Fox titled "The Fantastic Fingers of Felix Faust" which even made a frivolous use of the Necronomicon. The 3 demons he calls up enchant his fingers as part of an elaborate scheme to secure and use 3 artifacts of geological antiquity, the wheel,the bell and the jar. Spin the wheel,ring the bell and apply ointment from the jar to them. In 100 years, the 3 demons would be released, after the use of the spell. Meanwhile Faust would be able to use power from the still-dormant demons.
The JLA stopped Felix Faust,but the spell had already been cast. On the way back from dealing with the Time Lord,the JLA meet the demons who are working to return Earth to a billion years before (like Lovecraft's god monsters, they see no place for normal humans in their new world.). Gardiner Fox used his usual wild imagination in this 2-parter yarn.
This SHOULD have been the last of these 3 demons, but they had returned repeatedly,oft ignoring the fact that they would not be released until the mid 21st century.
