To expand on Sonadowlover's comment, basically the main source of the trend this time was wereshoes, to celebrate the cherry blossoms. Well, it probably would have been a trend even then, but it exploded because some idiots on tumblr said she was 'making sonic gay' and 'pushing the gay agenda' and crap.
So a bunch of artists decided to draw Pink Sonic as well to fight back in a way.
