Saved her from the dump!

"Cable management? What does that taste like?" XD

Saved this old gem from the dump! Optical drive, 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives, USB 1.0, Windows 98 pre-installed, starts up just fine! Only things I really want to do is get a CompactFlash-to-IDE adaptor to replace the old IDE hard drive and hook the output to go through a VCR. I promised InquFox that as soon as I could, I'd record me playing Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn onto a VHS tape and then upload it to YouTube.

Well, thanks! I had Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn on N64 way back in the day, and I had my eyes on a Pentium from Europe, but this was cheaper and better XD

I always was a PC kind of guy, but different ports usually have something extra and different, that make me curious. Such a fun game with neat cut scenes between missions, and not to mention awesome music!
Looks in good shape - hopefully the same in the inside.

I say, the 3D graphics is interesting, though I'm still rather a sucker for the PC version's sprites. ^^ And seems, they cut out the videos from the N64 version...

The N64 had no FMV (full motion video) mainly because of the limits of the N64. Generally N64 games had no FMV when PC games did. In fact, when I played the PC version I was caught off-guard by the FMV because it wasn't in the N64 version and I thought all versions were like that.

Yeah, but it's in 3D, which has an interesting twist.
How did you feel about the PC sprite graphics?

Honestly, it's kind of hard to tell the different kinds of infantry apart, usually you tell by looking at their helmets and pants.

Yeah, I rather preferred the tanks, buildings and background elements' looks.
Either way, I loved the game. :3

Are you trying to do something special with the VHS tape for looks or couldn't you figure out a better way to stream and record from such an old machine? You can stream via a capture device pretty easily via VGA.

I know I could, but I'm a sucker for weird setups and I'm kinda doing it because I find the idea amusing XD

Oh, i get that. My roomie and i do stuff like that too. "Just because we can." Now that i think about it (i can't believe i didn't think of it until now) i made a VHS recording of myself playing and talking over Zelda:OoT in the early 2000s the same way. Old computer, early glitchy emulator, VCR hookup, i dubbed over the audio with commentary and Zelda midis en leu of game audio and mailed the end product to an online totally-not-my-crush. My GAWD, how did i forget about doing that?! i even inserted commercial breaks and anime music videos to pad out the runtime. i wish i still had that tape!

Thank you. You have somehow, inadvertently taken me down a nostalgic rabbit hole.

I thought of a way you could have gotten the sound onto the tape. I know, my dream system is already unweildy enough, buuut... https://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/images2000x2000/Hos... XD One end goes into the 3.5mm jack on the sound card, the other into the VCR, then the audio out goes through another and into the speakers, tape gets the sound, you get a speaker! XD

Funnily enough it's like Let's Play before Let's Plays were a thing. ...except stupid, low tech and overly complicated. My setup was one of these with a simple mic for dubbing commentary in one ear (not both) and i played Zelda midis on my keyboard that was set up nearby in the other ear. i also used the keyboard for rim-shots (ba-dum-TSSS!) and playing along with the Ocarina. i don't think the emulator played game audio very well without cracks and pops and skips so it may as well have been a work-around for shite quality sound. i also did a full play-thru of MegamanX3.

Thinking back, i may have been a bigger nerd than i give myself credit for...

Nothing wrong with that, I sincerely hope someone finds the tape, it sounds like something I would love to watch, despite how clunky producing it must have been. XD

Thanks! It's a shame to see it go to waste, so I might as well use it for vintage gaming~

Even if it had a Dallas Clock Chip its hard to believe the CMOS still had power.

You'd be surprised. I've even seen batteries from the 1960's that work.
