Im still betting that the hero took the core on himself and the dragon ended up waking up to see the aftermath of that.

To get the highest amount of fells I agree.

The only other option is somehow they found a way to separate the core but unsure if with the current information we have if that would be a need for deeper explanation before feeling too easy for the happy ending.

As nice as that second option would be, it wouldn't explain why the dragons roar was so sad. a hard choice was definitely made, that's for sure.
