Cooper is wearing a "mask" to hide his true self. Poor guy has to put on a facade in order to "feel correct", in a way.
Andy does not realize that Cooper is a closet homosexual who has been grown up under the impression that homosexuality is "incorrect". Cooper's late father was a drunken homophobe that forced Cooper to hide his true feelings. Now Cooper exists as the individual he is, and will not change to his true self without some form of extreme pressure.
The last time he buckled was out of the desperation where he needed to pass his classes. He studied hard with Andy to pass.
Now...well, Cooper believes that, in order to appear strong, he has to exhibit this tough, asshole attitude. It is a defense to protect his psyche. No one wants to fail or lose friends or face. Cooper must continue running with this facade with other people, otherwise he would appear weak and possibly get bullied...in Cooper's mind.
