When they were separated for the first time, they were also made self-winding... no keys. It's near the end of the movie :)

OMGOMG I REMEMBER THIS! What as this movie called again!? The only memory I have of it was when a rat beat them up and smashed them with a rock. It was rather shocking when I was...9 years old?

It was "The Mouse & His Child". I saw it when I was very young, and yes -- the rat destroying them with a rock was one of the moments that shocked me to tears at that age, and always stuck with me. It's a strange, wonderful movie (and book).
