Maybe that's an indication of how close it is to catching up to the "present" -- i.e., the sketchiness is proportional to how faded Cooper's flashback memories are?

Eh, it would explain the relative sudden drop in quality between The Internship and Summers Gone. Or it could be that Jackaloo just wanted to be faster with Summers Gone and then got progressively better at (relatively) fast sketching/linework. I'm not sure which theory has the most explanatory power per bit of complexity.
