Independently published, yes. I have dedicated much of my financial resources to it because it is something I absolutely love doing. :) Still trying to get a few of my books out on the bookshelves. They are, at least, orderable at book stores. :)

Well yes. If you don't have contacts in high places, it is very hard to get publishers to notice you. You can still try submitting normally, but always have a backup plan. Self-publishing is a good 2nd alternative. I use a combination of Smashwords, Createspace, Kindle, and IngramSpark (which is terribly expensive but useful.) By the way, I do not recommend Lulu at all.
Another thing that you got to keep in mind is to stick with it no matter how long it takes. Don't give up. Fight it out. With independent publishing, it's all you. Nobody will help you, so you got to be strong and do all the work yourself. It's worth it.
