So, I’m playing D&D through Discord this coming January and of course I put my DM through his paces by wanting to play a Gnoll character.
This is Sheik, she’s a Gnoll Barbarian, She’s young 14 years old (17 in Human years) We used adjusted rules to read more believably. Instead of using Gnoll ages we used Half-Orc ages. She small for a Gnoll (6 ft 3 Inches, 223 Lbs) due to being a runt at birth. Her mother deemed her unworthy and ordered Sheik’s father to abandon her in the wilderness. Instead, he took her and escaped the village to raise her away from the clan.
She lost her father at a young age and was later captured by slavers and sold to an Arena Master. She spent the better part of a year being groomed for combat in non-lethal combat. She made a decent name for herself and lived a somewhat easy life.
One day, the arena master sold her to a Wealthy Blueblood for a large sum of money. Little did she know that she was to be part of a Monster Hunting game on the wealthy human’s land. He and eleven of his friends hunted her, unarmed and shackled through the woods on his property. She was gravely wounded and nearly died, until she was rescued and nursed back to health.
With no money to pay her savior back, she offered her own life as payment. She will serve her friend until the debt could be repaid.
I know that’s a long background for an introductory run through D&D through Discord but I’m hoping to use her a couple more time before she sails off to the Eastern Shores.

She was awakened from Yeenoghus control as a pup, but doesn't really remember much from her early childhood except stumbling through the forest and being found by an elf woman of great compassion, who took her back to her home, where she raised her (with the help of her human husband) along side their four half-elf children. She gave her an elven name, Reylana Greenleaf, while Reylanas father taught her to use a sword and bow when he felt she was old enough. However, Reylanas mother was executed by the agents of the King for harboring a Gnoll shortly after Reylana helped the people of her town rise up against the Mayor, who had enacted some really messed up laws, including Prima Noctes. (Reylana suffers from depression due to the death of her mother). She now seeks to avenge her mothers death, but also to protect the innocent. She is 18 years old (using human lifespans in this campaign) and is a fighter

Gnolls are such an amazing and underutilized "monster" from D&D. I hope with the more understanding of RL Hyenas will help form their culture and make them real characters in a player's handbook someday. I know it's silly but here's hoping LOL.

I like to think she and Reylana would get along, though Reylana ironically has a dislike of Gnolls. She'd probably still warm up to Sheik after a while.

Sheik has no love for Gnolls either. In the early years of her life, her father refused to talk about Gnolls and always approached any questions about them rather dismissively. Eventually Sheik found out why they were outcast and why her dad didn't speak of them. Since then, she adopted a sort of unfounded dislike of them. But being a Gnoll herself, she couldn't avoid the racial slurs and stereotypes that were flung at her, which didn't hurt her personally but only fueled her dislike of Gnolls.

Reylana, never knew much of her kind. She didn't really bother asking much, preferring to spend time getting into all sorts of mischief with her adoptive siblings. She does know that people are fearful of her kind, and she's endured the insults and rotten vegetables thrown her way, though they have worn her down and made her depression worse. She even has some self inflicted scars.

I loathe how gnolls are unplayable in 4th edition, and I agree with the of the stated hope that an understanding of hyenas will earn them a place at the game table that isn't just fodder for murder-hobo players...
