Wanted to give it a fair chance, it's okay but nothing great, I enjoyed Super Mario 3D World a lot more, I probably won't play this one again though.

Thank you, wasn't difficult tbh but it did take some time, the game is on the easy side but that last kingdom "Darker Side" can go fuck itself of how cheap it is.

I honestly think it could need some more content and levels and PLAYABLE LUIGI but it's the best Mario game since Galaxy and I ADORE Galaxy.

I don't think the issue is lack of content it already got plenty, the problem is most of the challenges feel bare bone and unfullfilling, you'd be walking around the kingdom and there's a moon just sitting there waiting for you to pick up, it's so boring, it's a generic collectathon like Yooka-Laylee and Donky Kong 64 only less glitchy (it has it's fair share of gliches, sever frame drop and camera issues) I much prefer Mario 3D World, but if you had fun with it then great, have fun and don't let my experience ruin the game for you.

I apologize for keeping you wait for long, I was busy and wanted to be fully sober.

So about Mario games in general, for me personally I always felt that Mario works best as a strait forward platformer accompanied with a nice challenge and good level design, the challenge shouldn't be "where the fuck should I go?" but rather "how can I get over this area?" so it should be obvious why I like Super Mario 3D Land/World more, of course everyone's opinion is different and some may argue that this should only apply to 2D Mario, some may even argue that even the 2D games should add more exploration, it all boils down to your preference.

Which brings us to the next issue, why do I like Mario 64 so much and not Mario Odyssey? Let's go back a little to the late 90s, the time when every game tried to force 3D, as a gamer I always preferred side scrollers best, after all these are my favorite style of games, the late 90s was to me the dark ages for platformers, it was the era where I was about to give up gaming altogether (later on I found others saying they had the same experience, Mike Metai and TopHatGamingMan for example) if you haven't lived that era you wouldn't know what I'm talking about.

So what is it about that era of gaming that bothered me so much? Most platformers shifted from a linear reach the goal experience to an open world collectathon, with the exception of Crash Bandiccot which I have to thank for keeping the traditional platformer and saving the day, needless to say Sonic Adventure did that too but judging from the history of the game and previously released 3D Blast I'm not too sure things would have ended the way they are so I'm kinda grateful of how things happened with Sonic during that era.

Going back to Mario 64, most people call this game "a collectathon" much like Banjo-Kazooie and the likes, here's where they're wrong though, for the longest time I was braising Nintendo for doing it right and not following what stupid RARE did (it's no secret I really don't like RARE, they made mostly overrated crappy shit), Mario 64 may look like an open world game at first glance but once you dive into that game it's a multi-linear platformer, you start from point A and right away you can go to any direction, each direction will lead you to a set of platformers and challenges that will end up with a power star, grab that star and you get kicked out of the level, that's GOOD level design, it gives the feeling of accomplishment, you feel like you beat a level, you earned the star, you get to move on, Banjo-Kazooie and the likes however got as far as possible from this idea and instead made the entire game a "collectathon", just wander around, collect shit, move on to the next area, repeat, it's shallow, it's stupid, it has its audience but it's not for everyone, that is exactly why Yooka-Laylee failed, we have passed that era of gaming, gamers knew that.

Here's the thing with Odyssey, up until that game was announced I always was confident that Nintendo made Mario 64 this way intentionally, after all they didn't offer to buy RARE when they went bankrupt like they did to HAL, which makes sense, RARE didn't make many great games but rather climbed over Nintendo's shoulders and got popular fast, just look at how they're doing now and you should know, without Nintendo's IP they don't have much to offer, so what happened here? The first glance of Mario Odyssey and I noticed it right away, it's a generic collectathon like Banjo-Kazooi, what's worse is after playing the game the level design is so boring, moons are laying around everywhere just waiting for you to pick them up, its gameplay is shallow and lacks any sense of accomplishment, quantity over quality, why make more challenges when we can just throw a few moons here and there? Yeah the game now has you collect 999 moons, wow it's bigger, but nope, it's not, you collect moons in a matter of seconds, boss fights were recycled, levels are too small, not my cup of tea.

I do see where you are coming from. but let me say these things

With Odyssey, I liked that it didn't kick you out of the level after you found a moon. especially for the kind of game it is, if it kicked you out every time you found a moon, it would take FOREVER to complete. plus, where would it kick you back to, their really isn't a specific hub like in SM64

I can understand why people didn't like Yooka Laylee, but I was one of those people that loved it cause it set out what it was trying to accomplish. A collection platformer with characters that spoke with little grunts and yelps. Other then that, if what you're saying about Yooka Laylee failing because of the same formula as Banjo Kazooie is true, then Odyssey do it and get praised for it?

Also, SM64 still has a bit of non-linearity to it. No matter what star mission you choose, you can still find the other stars laying around the map to collect in any order you choose. You can explore the level to your hearts desire. You aren't restricted to certain areas nor do you have a time limit.

To be fair even in SM64 when you get a star in the main hub you don't get kicked out but just promoted to save your game, that's said while I do see why certain people would find that to be annoying, being kicked out every time, you can't deny it helped give the feeling of accomplishment.

This is where I should mention I did not dislike Yooka-Laylee, my experience with Yooka-Laylee was a bit weird, all the complaints others have pointed out to I was frustrated with and then some, so I agree with what they said, however the game isn't without some redeeming quality, keep in mind I'm not a big fan of collectathons (or metroidvania style of sidescrollers, for that matter) so that sure didn't help me like the game, but the fact it got so many complaints by gamers and critics made me dislike it less and appreciate its good moments more, had it been blindly praised like Odyssey I'd be singing a different tune at this point, like how I look at RARE games, I can be a bit harsh when things get overrated because you get the impression it's better than it really is and for someone who didn't grow up with the SNES or N64 I don't hold any nostalgia for RARE games (save for Battletoads which I also think is overhyped as only the first level is good, damn good, but then the game gets way too difficult and confused way too fast) so yeah, I like Yooka-Laylee but it's not without its issues.
I'll also point out that I honestly can't stand the constant grunts for voice acting in the game, they could at least have an option to turn it off, again didn't grow up with the N64 so my judgement is nostalgia free.

As for Odyssey it boils down to two things:

The first is because like I said it's a much better game than Yooka-Laylee, when it does things right it does them right, when you posses other creatures the controls may be different but they're not broken, unlike Yooka-Laylee (I'm looking at you, snow truck platforming), the camera can be annoying at times but no where near as bad as it was in Yookay-Laylee (one of the worst cameras in a platformer in the past 10 years), and the level design is a mile better than that of Yooka-Laylee, not once did I see a dickish placement of a purple coin or a collectable, unlike the Quills in Yooka-Laylee that can have one single Quill hidden in the far distance in the worst place possible, talk about bullshit.

The second reason is quite obvious, it's Mario, no matter how some may disagree with this but Mario will always get a free pass, he copied Sonic many times, some of the most criticized elements of past Sonic games were copied in later Mario games, especially Sunshine and Odyssey (New Donk City is Soliana meets Station Saquare, realistic looking dogs in a Mario game where Chain Chomps exist, much like the dog from Sonic 06 looking realistic) but truth is, if Nintendo were Marvel Studios, SEGA is DC Universe, they can try harder and harder but the minute a tiny detail looks off the whole experience is ruined, while Mario will always get a free pass, heck, even the Mario and Sonic franchise despite how avrage and midiocore they are and despite being made by SEGA just the fact Mario's face is on them made them the most selling SEGA titles in years, let this idea sink in for a moment before you jump to any conclusions.

I should probably made this part more clear, while yes the level design in Mario 64 feels less open and more multi-linear I'm sure this wasn't the intended design but rather a limitation especially with it being one of the first 3D games to be released on consoles, they clearily were looking for a more open world approach but the thing is they put more focus on level deisgn and less on adding more content to the game, that's not to say 120 star in an early N64 title that only requires you to collect 70 isn't already a lot of extra content, especially back in 1996, but in Odyssey I got the vibe they rushed a big chunck of the game and had a lot of fillers just to meet the 999 stars.

Yeah but you get a soecial ending for going the extra mile and getting all 999, not that it's worth the effort if you adk me, but still it's nice my effort wasn't all for nothing.
