So this page is a bit different from the one posted on the patreon but not by much. I only changed up the dialogue that Mica has here that explains why she was being so harsh on Amy this whole time, mostly because the other one I had didn’t get the full story out and it bothered me. I also know that not everyone reads the description so, here we are.

It was a fleeting moment of Snidely-Whiplash Syndrome where you’re so ready to prove that you aren’t like the previous loser who took babysitting jobs for you that you create a self-fulfilling prophecy when the plan goes awry. Lesson learned though.

Another win for the little kids :).

"I know a store that could have good use for her."  Something tells me she's probably gonna end up in daycare or somewhere else.  Either way, it serves Amy right ;).

Well, great work and can't wait for the last page, and I'm guessing it'll be uploaded on Xmas eve :).

Personally I would have preferred seeing this as a sympathetic character being abused by an asshole, rather than an asshole being abused by another asshole.

The kids' parents are still going to punish them big time. And Sonic is going to run out of employees soon. The only possible babysitters left in this town are probably Eggman and his robots.

Wow. So would I. So, I actually didn't have to provide a reason for why she was doing this to her? Even after I kept being told I did?

Just another reason I have to stop. I can't figure out what people want or how to please everyone with these anymore. Than again, not a whole lot were really complaining that much about it.

In my experience people like the villain to actually have done something to deserve their punishment clearly defining them as the antagonist. This needs to be done from the beginning but since you provided context only after Amy was already beaten and only from the kids mouth it just feels like a poor excuse and most likely her lying to her little brother to appear in the right.

While most people me included don't like a blameless victim being abused, shoehorning in a reason afterward ends up worse than just going for what you wanted in the first place. Interrupting your own creative flow because of outside pressure is not only bad for you but overall lowers the quality of whatever you're trying to do.

Long story short do what YOU want to do, the people who love it will love it more and the people who don't will just move on with their lives. Take criticism with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila ;3

I feel like a piece of shit.

The comic was finished a month ago and after getting comments asking for a reason for her turmoil, I include one just to be told I've made it worse. Some fucking Chistmas gift I made for you all. What a goddamn joke this turned out to be. I can't make anyone fucking happy.

If you don't feel like doing stuff like this in the future that's fine but don't let the opinions of a few social rejects like us make you feel bad. I was trying to get across that forcing yourself to make compromises on your preferences just to try and please some of the people that look at your art will just end up hurting you and what you make but it seems I failed terribly... SDCharm I hope you feel better later I really didn't want this.

What's truly the worst thing about this is that I actually knew all of the stuff about how these stories should go down beforehand. I knew that it needed to be established at the beginning that she had a plan but I didn't because that's not what the original intention behind the comic was supposed to be. I just wanted to do some stupid babysitting antics but this time, more than any other, I feel like I just made decisions based on things I knew were going to be said again.

People ask for more girls, so I make it about Amy. Some want a reason for her trouble so I try and add one in far too late into its production. Then I start releasing the comic and see more comments asking for it so I go and make the explanation longer and more like clunky exposition at the last minute in my paranoia. I should have just realized that this wasn't like Sonic Survivor Island where I'm actually trying to tell a real story. There I include stuff like the Charmy and Cream lovey dovey subplot, Marine the Raccoon who acts like an asshole the whole time, does get routinely punished for it, and there's a clear villain who needs to be defeated too.

I worked on this for 3 months thinking it was going to be a fun little Christmas thing and I ended up ruining it and let myself take things harder than I should. I feel awful.

Instead of just explaining where I was coming from I just self-destruct because I have so little trust in myself. I don't even know what to do with myself right now. I need constructive criticism like yours but I don't ever handle it the right way.

I seriously thought about deleting this whole comic a few minutes ago but now that I've calmed down, I just pretend it never existed and let the people who like it, keep it.

I know its kind of pathetic crying over a comic but sometimes this feels like the only thing I know how to do. I'm sorry. Its not your or anyone else's fault. Its mine.

made any critical comments, and everyone else looks like that they're enjoying your story. Overall you should consider your story a success rather than a failure. :)

I feel that the only mistake you made is changing things because of one or two people asking for it, especially considering you were probably reluctant in doing it. I honestly wasn't expecting you to change anything. Next time just write what you want and everything will be just fine. If you try to tweak things you've already written out just because of some feedback then you just reduce your own enjoyment of the story and might not even please the one or two people who gave the original feedback.

Even then, I don't think you ruined the story by changing anything. It doesn't appear to have made much a difference for anyone else. :)

Imagine if SEGA took the feedback of every individual fan and tried to change the Sonic games to try and please them. All you'd have is a huge mess that pleases nobody. Plus they actually have a reason to want to please as many people as they can (money and shareholders). You don't. Just stick with what you enjoy and if other people enjoy your work then that's just a bonus. Take any feedback with a grain of salt - if someone gives you an idea that you actually like, then you can use that feedback, but if you don't agree then just ignore it.

I think not giving a reason is okay if you don't want to, then others can interpret them as they want. And I guess even here the readers might decide the kid is lying to her younger sister so that when Sonic returns or their parents come home and they have to explain why Amy is in a heap outside in a soiled diaper with general trauma, a concussion, and hypothermia, they don't end up contradicting each other and revealing the lie. Though even the reason given wouldn't be an excuse for assault and battery anyways so they're still going to be in big trouble.

For giving a reason, it's probably better to have a reason given in the beginning rather than at the end. Plus I feel like, while Amy would want to impress Sonic, I don't think she'd stoop down to punishing innocent children and fabricating a story for Sonic. Okay sure, she might chase after Sonic with her hammer, or abuse herself like in Sonic Battle, or get upset when she perceives someone might be competing as a love interest, or even telling a white lie and fabricating a boyfriend to make Sonic jealous like in Sonic Chronicles, but bullying children seems beyond her. Especially if she could see how things go and then embellish a story for Sonic when he shows up.

Maybe one character does something to get in trouble, gets justifiably punished, but decides to get revenge for the punishment and escalate things. Or maybe something falls and gets smashed on its own, Amy doesn't see it but only hears it, and punishes the kids because she thinks they did it - from the kids' perspective they get punished unfairly but from Amy's perspective she just didn't know. Or maybe the kids just didn't like the colour pink, or they didn't like the taste of something Amy cooked for them earlier. Or maybe Amy was instructed that the children had a time out due to something they did before she got there, so she'd have a reason to be hard on them. Something so we know the kid is doing it for a reason more than just wanting to be an ass, without making it look like Amy is the ass.

Whatever. I'm done. This was a failure and I'm never doing anymore.

This wasn't supposed to actually make people seriously consider the prospect of concussions and hypothermia. It was supposed to be a cartoon. I fucking hate myself so much right now.
DeletedAmyFan
7 years, 1 month ago
Well, yeah, I know it's just a cartoon. I was just joking about the concussion and hypothermia thing as a way of describing the abuse based on what it would have caused in real life, but since it's a cartoon those injuries don't really happen in the setting. Sorry if you thought I was too serious.

As for the other stuff I think it's just really personal taste for me - I really like Amy as a character so I wouldn't want to see her abused without her getting retribution in the end or having some reason that's fair for both sides of the conflict such as a misunderstanding that ends up escalating.

I think you should just do what you like, so if you like doing these slapstick stories, be my guest. If you get some criticism or feedback that you agree with then you can consider it in your future work, but if the criticism doesn't agree with your own view of what you're trying to do, you're free to ignore it. Especially when you consider that only one or two people suggested adding some context to the story, and most of the feedback and comments have been positive - including some positive comments from myself. :)

In particular I'd avoid making last minute changes in the middle of a story just to respond to criticism, since you might do something that your other supporters don't like or that you don't enjoy yourself. And consider especially if someone is critical of your work, constructive criticism or not, they may very well be picky as well, and if you try to change things to please them they might be critical of the change as well.

For example, I agreed with another user who suggested that we should know why the kid decided to be a brat, since it would be nice to have some context for why things are escalating. But I don't think it's absolutely required and if you prefer to just have some slapstick abuse then that works just as well. Another piece of advice often given is "show, don't tell", where it's better to tell the story through actions rather than dialogue. Trying to insert a reason near the end of the story ends up violating this piece of advice.

And personally for me I feel the reason you decided to add in leaves a bad taste in my mouth, where your interpretation of a character I like ends up clashing with mine. But, again, that's just how I feel and you shouldn't take it personally.

Overall, you shouldn't hate yourself just because of a bit of criticism, and I do hope you don't give up and that you can keep doing more of these stories. You should be making these stories because you enjoy making them :). If other people enjoy then too then that's a bonus. Don't worry about the critics too much - it is impossible to please everyone. If you try to please everyone else then you end up not pleasing yourself.

Just look at SEGA's attempts to please everyone and how successful it's been (hint: it hasn't). And they're running a business. You're not. So you don't need to please everyone. If someone gives feedback you disagree with, just say "sorry, but I prefer to do it [way you're currently doing it]" and keep doing what you enjoy. And if that person responds negatively, then just delete their comment and/or lock the thread.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. :)

Well sorry about that bad taste I left in your mouth. That reason wasn't even originally supposed to be there. The other one isn't much better. I kind of just want this page to disappear. It IS a failure.

I think the best thing you can do is use this as a learning experience so you don't run into the same issues next time around, i.e. you should just do the stories you want, and not worry too much about what other people want :)

Perhaps you should consider uploading the original version here as well (you can add more images to an existing submission) - whatever you had originally planned (and thus could write the rest of the story with it in mind) is probably much better than what you decided to change it to at the last moment (and trying to make it fit into the rest of the story that's already written out).

So hey. I know what you can start doing. Write this on a post it note and stick it on your monitor. Ready?

1. I am worth being kind to myself.
2. I deserve my own kindness and compassion.
3. I'm going to make mistakes and that's OK. Mistakes are lessons. They're how I learn.
4. Even if I don't learn my lesson it's OK. As long as i'm doing my best to be kind to myself and others that's all that matters.
5. I forgive myself.
6. Kindness and compassion. That's the goal. Kindness and compassion towards myself and others.

Now-Keep in mind just because you might draw fetishy stuff that's all fiction. It doesn't make you a bad person no matter what anyone says. Those six steps will help start you down the path. Just remember that as long as you -try- to be kind to others and yourself you're doing something a lot of people don't bother doing. Keep an open mind. Be willing to listen to other's advice but keep in mind that just because someone doesn't like something you do it doesn't mean you're wrong or they're right. It just means they have a different perspective. For some it's a matter of their just having a different taste or for others it might be they're a bit more experienced when it comes to story. Don't dismiss your previous efforts just because you've learned something.

Every effort is a step along the path. Each piece you do is a stepping stone. An expenditure of effort that has taken you one step closer to your next plateau. Keep at it and do your best to believe in yourself. You're worth that belief.

Yes, he should. And hiring Eggman would be perfect for that. Plus if the kids are really too much to handle then Eggman is the one getting abused rather than Sonic. I'm sure Sonic would enjoy that.

Plus if Eggman is busy babysitting kids he's not taking over the world :P
