Random thought ... why do the dark side folks wear black robes and use red lightsabers? Wouldnt they be more effective in their evil if they just dressed like jedi? Or used any color but red for their weapons?

From an EU perspective, when it concerns dark-siders during the Galatic Civil War, they didn't have to hide their affiliation; often wearing dark colors as members of the Imperial Inquisitorious.
As for red lightsabers- red was favored by dark-siders due to it being connected to the Sith culture and race, where red signified the color of blood and rage. As a result, most synthetic crystals created through Sith alchemy ended up producing such colors.
Not all dark-siders used red blades, though- Jerec's Dark Jedi used many different blade hues, even blue and violet.
