Well usually when I'm doing it I avoid using the lumi/shade layers because they make things look weird when I do it... multiply and overlay seem to work better - but I have no idea what they do. It helped a little bit to start trying to use warm/cold colors, but again I dont know enough about any of that to explain anything - maybe Em can give you a better explanation lol. Just like try shading thingies, and if you don't like the light color you can always swap them around to different hues, just use try to use color instead of white/black. its a bit hard to get things to look right with white/black.
