Easily the newest to the scene this year, but by no means less terrifying! Hell, he made it 8th place in the Top Ten this year and he’s less then a year old, that says enough! Bendy and the Ink Machine to me is the game Five Nights at Freddy’s wanted to be (just like how I say Undertale is the game EarthBound wanted to be, but that’s a shit storm for another day) It takes the same type of scenario but actually makes into… you know… a game! I hate to really compare the two as in a way it is sort of like apples to oranges, but it’s how I see it and why I was so happy to see it executed well, where as I saw the Freddy’s series fall so short.
Maybe it harkens back to my sincere fear of Disney and it’s soul sucking organization or that every artist has a very dark side to them that makes Bendy’s simplistic nature terrifying. Don’t know what I mean? Well then you’re probably not an artist, but I’ll elaborate. Because art is an extension of one’s own psyche, very much of our ego and id are put into our creations. All those dark, evil thoughts that all of humanity have, we vent into our art. In many cases this results in the creation of fantastic villains, villains whose only saving grace are that they can’t be made real, so seeing one like Bendy made into a reality is especially terrifying to an artist.
There’s a lot of things that this game has done right and I hope it remains that way in the next installments. I wasn’t too crazy about certain elements of chapter 3, so here’s hoping. Either way I’m glad it’s gaining popularity, I’m sure it’ll be the next Five Nights a Freddy’s or Undertale in terms of fandom but hey, if they game’s good I stand by it regardless
