They look the same due to Ken Penders epic laziness. Seriously he made the entire echidna race just Knuckles with different outfits and different shades of red. His parents just look like two disguises he would have used to trick Scratch and Grounder.

I don't mind the physical similarities too much. In fact, it's why I love drawing them in comics. Imagine Amy mistaking Sonic's MOM for her son! The possibilities are endless!
