The Mystery Skulls' "Ghost" animation is one of those things that is remembered fondly for all the right reasons. I'll always remember when I first saw it, it blew me away which is saying a lot for something that is an open homage to Scooby Doo, a series I can't stand, but what I gave this music video was it had heart... no pun intended. It presented a story that both paid tribute to what inspired it and was totally unique while being confined to the time span and lyrics of the song it was put to. Going in without any prior knowledge, you immediately get what's going on ad get wrapped into the story (a factor which was sadly not replicated in the "Freaking Out" sequel) and recall thinking when I watched it the first time "This is what a music video should be!" and it says a lot for a fan made project which is more remembered then the real, official "Ghost" music video... like honestly, has ANYONE ever seen that thing?
One of the first things that hit me when I saw this music video back when it came out was "Damn, it's too late to add this into my countdown" as I literally saw it ON Halloween, so I made up in my mind I'd do it next year... then I totally forgot until now! My bad! Still, even to this day "Ghost" remains one of my all time favorite music videos and whether you like Scooby Doo or not, it's worth a look just to see how well it plays homage to old, campy horror tropes. It's the perfect setting for Halloween and after all, isn't that what this is all about?
Now while I think "Ghost" is an amazing music video, I think the style and art and overall direction is flawless, there are numerous factors that placed Lewis relatively low, one being that "Freaking Out" while it still looks good is really crap by comparison and leads to my next point that it pretty much just let the world know that it was somebody's OCs we all needed to learn about before going into the material which is always artistic suicide. Plus, it still bares the moldy old stink of Scooby Doo on it, a series that should have died off decades ago and continues to reincarnate generation after generation like some kind of Frankenstein-ian horror gone wrong. So yeah. No. 16. That's all yer gettin'
