How often would you ever need rear facing weapons? Maybe I play too many lightmechs but if your not looking forward your pretty much dead already.

Only reasons that come to mind is if you're participating in a Grand Melee or are in a trial against an aero pilot.

The "D" variant was built to be right in the midst of the enemy. Against other Clans it's a pointless variant, but in Inner Sphere zones where it's very easy to get ambushed and surrounded (esp. in a dense forest or city), being able to hit with nearly all of your firepower front or back is an invaluable ability to have, and gives the enemy a nasty surprise.

I play outnumbered a lot so sometimes it is handy.  But I prefer the light side too.

I know what people are thinking and the answer is 'do not'.  Do Not.  DO NOT try to use the TAG as a laser pointer.

I'd take a Nova Cat pattern for MWO. My Jenner IICs could use a matching pattern. I'd even give one to my ATM Jenner.
