--Chapter 15

Cymaenie stared intently at the number punched into his cell phone, his finger hovering over the “Send” button.

It was the following day in the late evening and he was nervous about calling Tundra.

He had been staring at the phone for nearly twenty minutes now, unsure of what ever to say if he answered.

Just play it cool Cy. He told himself. Sure. Easier to say than to do. He had thought of the “perfect” things to say at least six times now, but scrapped them all and started at a clean slate.

Do something dammit… the weekend will be over by the time you decide. Take a plunge… take a risk… push the button! His head was screaming at him.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, his finger depressed the button and his phone dialed out and began ringing. Suddenly, his heart fluttered and pounded loudly in his head. Hopefully he could hear over the heavy thumping in his brain.

The ringing was interrupted and a voice asked, “Hello?”

Cymaenie felt a dry lump in his throat and it took everything he had to choke out, “Hello… is this… Tundra?”

“Yes it is. Who might this be?”

“It’s Cymaenie we met at…”

“Oh!… err… hi!”

There was silence then on both ends of the phone.

Cymaenie pinched himself in the tail and was able to bumble out, “So, did you want to get together maybe tomorrow night?”

“Sure. I would love to. What time?”

“Nine okay?”

“Nine is fine.” He gave Cymaenie his address and he quickly scribbled it on a piece of paper.

“Alright. I will be there at nine sharp. See you tomorrow.”

“Okay. See you then.”

He hung up the phone and giddily looked at the paper in his paws. He hugged it and tucked it safely into his wallet then looked at the clock. It was about four in the afternoon.

He had work to do.

He got out of bed, grabbed a quick shower and got dressed. He was out the door shortly thereafter and caught a bus. He transferred once and found him self outside of a seedy looking car lot with a hand painted sign over the only structure called “Super Used Car Universe”.

He rolled his eyes at the cheesy name as he entered the lot and a fat, shifty, greasy looking badger in a 70’s throwback powder blue suit came out of the office.

“Friend, have I got the car for you!” he said before his large ass was even out of the door. He quickly started heading towards Cymaenie, his thin green tie flapping behind him as he huffed it across the lot.

He shaded his eyes and his level of desperation ceased when he saw the raccoon standing with his arms crossed.

“Oh… it’s just you Cymaenie.” He said when he approached. He slicked his hair back and adjusted his tie.

“What can I do for you? Trading in the Sunbird?’

“Nah. It’s no longer in good running shape.”

“How? That was one of my best cars…”

“Wrecked it. Don’t worry Al. Was a good car.”

He nodded and put his hands in his pockets and looked over the raccoon. “So, I take it that you’re in the market for a new one?”

“You’re good.” Cymaenie joked.

The badger beamed and stroked his muzzle in thought. “I’ve got a real beaut. Not sure its up your alley, but I’ve been holding it for a few weeks.”

“Does it run?”

“Cymaenie…” he said coolly. “I take good care of my true friends.”

He rolled his eyes. “Alright Al. Lets have a look.”

Al clapped his hands together and motioned for the raccoon to follow. They crossed the lot to the back where he kept his vans and pickups. He turned behind a van and when Cymaenie followed, he stopped short at the car parked between the red Ford Econoline and a white Chevy Astrovan.

“Nineteen and thirty eight Chevrolet Sedan.” Al said running his paw over the front fender.

The car was in mint condition. Cymaenie rubbed his eyes as if to picture it as a mirage. It was gleaming in the late afternoon sun in a clean, black paint, the chrome all solid and gleaming as well.

“You like then I take it?” Al joked tapping the side of the car and looking at Cymaenie’s awe. “Its fully clean, with a V8, four speed stick, bench seats, full spare, AM/FM radio, I took the liberty of putting a CD deck in it. Have been holding onto it for a while for a good customer.”

“How much?” Cymaenie drooled the question out.

“How does 17 sound?”

“Okay… what’s wrong with it?”

“I told you nothing Cymaenie. I practically gave you the Sunbird.”

Cymaenie thought back and nodded. “Good point. It’s sold Al.” he shook the badger’s hand. He fumbled for his pack and started counting out billfolds of twenties.

He paid Al and the badger quickly hurried to fill out the necessary paper work and get the keys. He returned in a short four minutes and passed Cymaenie the documents and keys.

He happily took them and with another shake, was in the car and smiling widely as he felt over the steering wheel.

Al waved and headed back off across the lot as some fresh meat entered the lot using his tagline, “Friend, have I got a car for you!”

Cymaenie fired up the engine and held in the clutch. He felt the linkage in the gear box. It was solid. He shifted into first, and with a signature deep grumble of an old school V8, pulled out from between the vans and headed for the blacktop.

After leaving the lot, he headed straight for his safe house and pulled inside. He parked, got out and raided his license plate box, affixed a plate and set to loading up the car with the recovered goods for the lion employer.

Following the address that was given to him, and a few glances at his Herdnan road map, he was soon on the more upscale part of Herdnan. He rolled by finely trimmed lawns, gated estates and gleaming Rolls Royces parked in the curving driveways.

He looked at the ornate address numbers and soon he came upon a large estate with the correct numbering. He turned his car into the tan gravel driveway and stopped at the heavy iron gates where two furs were standing guard in suits.

They approached the car and Cymaenie rolled down his window. “I’m here to see…”

“Are you Darkring?” one of the furs asked.

“Yes. That’s me.”

“Head on in.” he waved to the gate fur on the other side of the fence and it slid open smoothly.

Cymaenie let off the clutch and rolled through the fence into the lush green yard into the shade of the large, old oaks. The drive wound to the left and the yard opened up again to a large fountain, mown grass, the huge house and three black Cadillacs parked out front.

He stopped the Chevy and turned it off. He got out of the car and another fur approached him as he got out of the car.

“The Don is expecting you Darkring. If you would be so kind, I have to frisk you.”

Cymaenie nodded and held his hands out while the fur padded his clothing.

The other fur nodded. “Thank you. Right this way.”

Cymaenie was led up into the posh house and immediately to an office which was a large oak room about the size of the main room at his own house. The lion was sitting at his desk, on the phone as he entered.

The other fur nodded to the lion and exited the room, closing the doors behind him.

“…exactly my point. Anyway, let me finish this later. I have some business to take care of. Chao.” He hung up the handset and smiled at Cymaenie.

“Ah Darkring. I was not expecting you so soon. Cigar?” he asked offering a wooden box.

Cymaenie nodded and picked one out and gave a thankful nod to the lion. “Well, with a matter of such urgency and such weight, I did what I had to. I was able to recover everything you asked.”

The lion nodded. “You are certainly a master of your craft. My apologies for not being so forthright the other night. A business man such as myself must be careful of his contact with the unknown world.” He offered Cymaenie a lighter.

Cymaenie lit the cigar and gave the lion a confused look.

“I see you don’t understand my meaning. My name good sir. I am Don Tasrattliga, a businessman.”

“Well very nice to meet you Don. I have your items in my car.”

“Excellent!” he said grabbing a briefcase. “And as a businessman, I live up to my end of the bargain.” He handed the case to the raccoon. “Come, let us take a walk. I trust that my employed staff was not intimidating.”

“No. Not at all. Very professional.”

They headed back out of the house and to Cymaenie’s new car. “This is your vehicle?”

“Yes Don Tasrattliga. I just bought it a few hours ago. I had a rather severe accident with my old junk heap. Decided why not treat myself?”

He gave a hearty laugh while Cymaenie opened the rear car door revealing all of the loose items, then the trunk where he had put the safe. The lion snapped his fingers and several of the other furs headed over and grabbed the items and carried them into the house.

The Don took a drag from his own cigar and nodded as he looked over the recovered items. Cymaenie closed the trunk and tossed his briefcase into the back seat and closed the door.

“These are interesting times that we live Darkring. But, I’m sure that you are fully aware of that.”

Cymaenie cracked a laugh at this. “Certainly they are.” They walked from the car to a small sitting area in a side garden to the house and sat under the shade from some tall, bushy King palms.

“Darkring, I have a proposition to make to you. Trustworthy furs are so hard to come by these days.”

Cymaenie intently listened as he puffed a large cloud of smoke from the fine cigar. “Go on. I’m all ears.”

“I’m offering you a job with the family business. Your fine skills at infiltration are exactly what I’m looking for. You would be put on the payroll, which is under the table and pays nicely. You would be well taken care of under the umbrella of the family.”

This hit Cymaenie rather deeply. He had always been freelance. And it was clear that the lion across from him was clearly in organized crime. His apprehension clearly showed.

The lion sat back and tapped his cigar. “I assure you that you have nothing to fear my dear raccoon. I’m offering this to you because I believe that you are far more valuable than subjecting yourself to petty crime.”

“What…what about if I wanted to get out after a period of time?”

The lion smiled. “Don’t worry. I’m got going to cut you and feed you to the fish or anything of that sort. I’m sure that there would be an understanding that even if you join the family, and after you decide that it is time to go that what businesses we are in are kept under the strictest of confidence.”

“Of course Don Tasrattliga. I can’t really spew any information due to how I came upon this offer. I’m not so fond of the idea of going to prison, much less of taking others with me.”

This brought another smile. “It’s a heavy life that we lead. Its never a 9 to 5 job, and far from a solid security. Things never play out the way we wish them to be. But, I’m not pressuring you into anything that you’re not willing to get into. This is solely your decision.”

Cymaenie sat and thought while he sucked on his cigar, thinking over the options. He would have to be crazy not to take it. It would be easy money.

“What about my side work and my house…”

“What you do is your own life. I would just hope that you would refrain from hitting those under our umbrella.”

“Well of course not.”

“Then I see no problems. You’re a professional. I know that you won’t jeopardize your safety and so forth.”

Cymaenie nodded. “I think I will take you up on your offer. I would be crazy to pass something like this up.”

The Don nodded. “Very good. I’m glad to have you in the family Darkring.”

They stood and headed back out to the cars. The Don shook his hand and smiled, his golden mane glimmering in the warm sun. He looked over the cars.

“All these black Cadillacs, I need some color. I’ve often thought about getting a nice little sports car.”

Cymaenie’s mind snapped and he thought to the Ferrari he had yet to move. He winked. “Friend, have I got a car for you.”
