I note the resemblance to the Marvel superhero, Thing. It was decided that each of the Fantastic Four would represent one of the 4 Classical elements. Reed Richards - Mr,Fantastic - fluid & moldable like water. Sue Richards nee Storm - Invisible Woman - clear as air. Johnny Storm - Human Torch - I don't need to describe HIM. Ben Grimm - THING - as hard & as strong as stone.
While the first 3 could lead normal lives, Kirby & Stan Lee decided that Thing was to be -a monster ! And thereby hangs the angst that adds to the drama power of the series. Ben - torn bet becoming normal & no longer able to contribute to the team, and remaining a rock monster, clobbering his way to victory but stared & pointed at by the general public. Just like the Hulk, whenever he is cured or attains the best of BOTH worlds, something by & by happens to restore the status quo....
