You know, I don't really think Ash has ever WON a pokemon battle, if I'm remembering right.
Usually it happens the same way every time. He gets into a battle, starts getting his ass kicked, Team Rocket pops in to try to do their tom-fuckery, he kicks THEIR ass, and then the one he's fighting against goes "Wow! Thanks for saving the day! Actually, here! You can just take the badge as a symbol of gratitude!"
I don't think there's been a single fight he's won. Even in the Championships he gets beat near the start of the rosters.

Nah, he has. I only really saw the first series, but he actually beat Brock, Lt Surge, Koga and Blaine in rematches. He was winning against Erika when Team Rocket attacked and he beat Team Rocket when they were filling in as Viridian Gym Leaders. The only one who was winning against Ash before interruption by Team Rocket was Misty, and that was only because Pikachu wouldn't fight her.

...except when the anime randomly decides Ground CAN be hit by Electric.
Unless this is Alolan Geodude, in which case I'm not even sure if resistances register in anime logic.
Anyway, it's been known for years the anime is rigged, and I think that is why Alola is slice of life now, so they don't have to worry about that pesky need for a satisfying climax. If they do end up having a league and he does well in it, it no longer counts. You had your chance and we're not giving you any more. If you couldn't let Ash win when it truly mattered, then you shouldn't even do it at all.

That joke is not just old, it's ancient. IIRC Ash's first clean victory in a Pokémon battle was against Lt. Surge, that was how many billion years ago?
Really, the whole "Ash's an eternal retard" problem comes from the way the season setup has become a formula - reboot the team, ditch the old companions for new ones, reset Ash's skills and let him build himself up to lose all over again. The soulless corporate suits get the best of both worlds - the new kids coming in every season get to watch a fresh start free of continuity, and the fanboys/fangirls who should get tired of seeing Ash never develop keep watching anyway out of a false hope that someday the show will grow up.
I think by now fans should've realized this ain't Harry Potter and won't ever be. Yet, after over a decade and a half of this bullshit, we get the fanbase melting down over Ash unceremoniously dumping another companion like he did umpteen times. Did people really think Ash/Serena was going to stay a thing? Really?
