And so I thought I'd celebrate by making a simplified vector of the Roman Flag.
The Roman Flag consists of a long white banner with a blackbird in flight painted blue (I'm not sure why). In her (and yes it is a female) left talon she holds a bundle of wheat and the right talon a bundle of javelins. Below the image is normally written "E pluribus unum" which translates as "One stands above many others". In the context it's intended the Romans see themselves as the overseers of the world, here to tend it like a beautiful garden. Though it sounds rather aggressive it's actually more like the Romans are protectors of the world. The wheat and javelins represent the carrot and stick approach, one hand offers food as a kindness to those who obey and the other uses spears against those who rebel. The blackbird represents the power of words and traditionally it was shaped with the wings drawn in fron of the face to make a shape similar to a shield to represent strength though this died out as long shields replaced the old round shields the Romans used to use. At the end of the Roman Empire the blackbird was shown looking back over its shoulder to represent reminiscing about the past as Catholicism changed the ideals of the once glorious empire. Following the fall of the Roman Empire Saint Paul's Cathedral in Rome began using a flag with two heads, one looking back into the past and the other looking into the future. Many people often misinterpreted the bird as being an eagle especially after the British armed forces began using the flag with a golden eagle in place of the blackbird in the Colonial Era. Nowadays the flag can seen on ex-British naval forces ships and crests as well as in old schools and government buildings.
