I've been drawing exclusively male characters for the last 10 years. It was never a conscious choice, but just a personal preference of what I liked to see in my art - I'm gay after all. It's not that I didn't have any people asking me if I were to draw females or other genders in the future. However I always felt pushed in one direction, when people inquired about that subject. If I ever was gonna draw a female character, it was because I wanted to. I needed a proper motivation and a subject matter, that I felt comfortable with. And after such a long time, this opportunity finally presented itself with this picture.
It started out with the movie Suicide Squad. Which, despite its very apparent flaws and shortcomings, I thoroughly enjoyed. I thought the visual re-interpretation of some characters was amazing - especially The Joker and Harley Quinn. Others, like my beloved Killer Croc, fell through completely for me. I still don't get why they just used a beefed up CGI character like Marvel does with Hulk - I would have loved to see a Killer Croc in a style remiscent of the Arkham Batman games, but oh well. The story bits of Harley and Joker were my favorite part of the film and I just fell in love with their twisted relationship.
So, when I was searching for an idea to draw for the Eurofurence charity, I really wanted to draw something in the style of the Suicide Squad film. The visual style and the music really stuck with me there and so I decided, I wanted to portray Harley Quinn and Joker as furry characters. To give the picture even more weight, I decided to record my drawing process. This idea however kinda ended up half-assed, as I was so nervous during the sketching process, that I decided against recording it. It just helped be gather confidence, to tackle this on my own, as I was unsure if I could even pull off such a picture.
I started recording my drawing process, when the lineart was complete. After that, I was confident enough that I could finish this picture. The coloring itself proved very stressful as there are a lot of details on both characters, that required tending to - like all the little tattoos. However, I was surprised at how I was progressing with this picture, as both characters look just like I hoped they would. :3
Once the picture was finished, the idea to show the timelapse video at a panel during Eurofurence came up. I was set on using this picture to showcase my drawing process, but felt doubt trickle in as the convention got closer. Eventually I decided against using this picture and instead drew another one from scratch (the Spartan lion), this time with the recording process capturing the entire picture creation. In the end, I believe that it was the right decision, even though it meant that this pictures' exposure would suffer. I was however happy to see, that it also sold at a great sum in the Eurofurence charity booth. :3
So there you have it. I am not sure if I will draw more female characters in the future or expand to other directions. I am stil debating on creating a second account for the sake of trying out a few things. We'll see how this works out. I will however continue to produce heaps of gay porn, that's a guarantee. ;3
This concludes my uploading spree for August. Most of the pictures I used for Eurofurence were drawn back in June/July, but I had to keep them secret until now. ;3
I hope you guys enjoy this picture and I'm looking forward to read your comments! :3
Auch wenn mir das Design von Joker in diesem Film nicht so gut gefiel ist das Design in deinem Bild echt schick. Sehr schlicht aber trotzdem passt es wunderbar. Harley ist dir auch sehr gut gelungen!
