Iraya's background is both of arcane studies and military practice. She never was a full battle-mage, but traveling with large groups of soldiers often meant that getting one's hands dirty -- be it by mud or by blood -- was a prospect the dragon quickly grew accustomed to. Even with the lack of a purely athletic figure, her legs can propel her forward at an alarming rate for most who're not expecting such speed out of her. Add to that the fact that she can fling spells with relative efficiency even while on the move, and it's no real surprise that she took part in many counter-ambush efforts.
