After years of inactivity from the paranormal in the city, the Super Mario Busters go their separate ways, but Luigi stayed behind to continue living in the firehouse. Hey, somebody's gotta watch over the containment unit, right? He decided to open his own class at the local college, Luigi Mario's Paranormal Phenomena 101, hoping to spread his knowledge to many eager young minds. Sadly... the turnout wasn't exactly... good. In fact he only got 4 students.
Lakilester (also known as Spike, playing the part of Garrett) - A longtime fan on the Super Mario Busters, he took the class so he could hear about all of their adventures and learn more about ghosts, himself.
"Agent 3" (Splatoon 2 confirmed Agent 3 was the girl Inkling in Splatoon 1, playing the part of Kylie) - A paranormal enthusiast, she has extensive knowledge on the occult, second probably to only Luigi, himself.
"Gloves" (his name in the Splatoon 2 chapter of the manga, playing the part of Eduardo) - Originally a huge skeptic on all things ghost related, he only took Luigi's class under the intention of getting an easy A. Little did he realize that in doing so his life would change forever.
Rotor "Boomer" Walrus (playing the part of Roland) - After being impressed by the Super Mario Busters' equipment at a road show years ago, namely their vehicle, Ectoad-1, and their proton packs, Rotor became inspired to become an engineer, and a very talented one at that. He took Luigi's class to learn more about the technology they used for their cases.
While Luigi was giving his lecture, however, a powerful spirit had emerged from an inter-dimensional rift due to an excavation site to create a new subway tunnel. Due to being the only member left in the city, Luigi then tried to fight the spirit alone, but it proved to be ineffectual, as he was easily defeated. Knowing he wouldn't be able to do it on his own, Luigi recruited his class to help with this dilemma and the new team of Busters was formed.
Yes, I skipped over some details, go watch the first 2 episodes of Extreme Ghostbusters for the full origin story.
And I know you may be thinking "Why this random assortment of characters?" That's the point, the team themselves were 4 random strangers to one another until fate pulled them together. These 4 just made the most sense to me.
