I'm trying to recall a city that I only saw in a token way. I THINK Berlin was just a pause on the railroad from Vienna,Austria to Amsterdam,Holland. I think the train halted to change engines for the 2nd part of the run. I believe my folks & I took a look at the engines, and I also recall having trouble sleeping on the train: dropping the option of a sleeper car made for less money. While in Berlin, we never left the station, but reboarded the train and then were on the way to Amsterdam. We still had to wait to see Amsterdam as my folks had right away booked the Happy Holland Tour which took us to places.
We arrived at Vienna a day earlier than planned: there was talk of an airplane strike from Venice to Vienna, and both sides were not negotiating in good faith. Hearing no good news as the strike date neared, we left Venice a day early to get to Vienna, and had to stay 1 night in a hostel because we couldn't get the hotel reservation a day early.
Well, that was in the 70's.

At least she didn't have the frightening experience that one stewardess had,in an African city. She was pregnant and not married. She could hardly sleep that layover night, because it was not a democratic nation and they were giving long prison sentences to women who were pregnant out of wedlock. She feared that they would notice her not having a husband and would force their way into the hotel room to arrest her, in the night. She could NOT relax until she was on the plane and it taking off.
