mmmh I never thought the matter that deeply, all we have is assumptions, In the equestria girls movies I don't recall seen a pony alongside a human, some dudes do the math for the size difference but I never give it too much importance... when I draw the sketch for my client I was thinking in a house-pet character, something in the range of a cat or a medium dog. Leash a conventional pony (bigger than most of house-dog pets) would be incovinient... I tell you what I gonna play Dark Souls 3 now.

Well, any animal bigger than your domesticated cat needs some walking, so of course, anyone who'd have an MLP pony (or any non-hostile animal for that matter) would have a walk with him.
Also, if they were even 2/10 as intelligent, such pet would be closer to a dear friend than a pet.
