Umemis began with the beginning, the first light. Time began and so did eternity. Umemis formed with it, seeing the first spark that bloomed in the darkness. He remembered that time through all of the lives, all of the aeons: the beginning of the universe.
After the Beginning, he drifted through the new cosmos, which was empty of all things. He would expire and begin again every now and then but it did not matter in the void. After an aeon, the first star began to burn and Umemis approached it cautiously, having spent so long in darkness. It was barely a moment before it died but many more sprung up around the spirit of Infinity, and he gazed upon them, watched them spin and turn around him.
After another aeon, these too died, but something was left behind, something new. Things that neither burned nor shone began to fill the universe and it was to this that Umemis’s attention was drawn. Among the stars, he had not noticed, but these new things moved more quickly. The stars shone for many millions of his death cycle, but it took only thousands for these new things to create again. Interested, he waiting patiently, a word forming in his mind from those who would speak it in the distant future. Rock. Earth. That’s what they were called.
The rock spun faster and faster around a child sun, one he had watched be born from the remains of a thousand other stars. Slowly, and quickly, an orb began to spin around the young star. His curiosity again aroused, Umemis settled on the sphere of earth and waited.
More aeons passed.
The world around him was changing. It was no longer dead rock, fire had taken root beneath the surface and it burst forth in waves. Again Umemis was covered in darkness but of a different kind. The sun was still above and the fire below. When the clouds began to clear, the world was again changed. Now there were shining oceans, and air that yellowed the sun above.
Another aeon went by and Umemis noticed small things in the oceans that were, once again, different from all else. They moved, not by the laws of the cosmos, but by themselves. He watched them, enthralled, as they grew and changed, becoming more complex and larger. They left the oceans over many of his cycles, walking on the land instead. Small beasts rose and fell in cold. Large ones rose and fell in darkness and fire. Again and again, the spirit watched these things almost disappear before resurging. The word came to him soon enough. Life.
The cycle of death and renewal was more obvious now. The details of the previous lives faded but still Umemis watched. These creatures, this life, were so small, insignificant on the timescales in which he existed. The stars were eternal and unchanging compared to these little lives, but he was fascinated all the same. They were not simply complexity, they made complexity.
He slowed down when, again, something new appeared. New life, in a myriad of different forms that unlike their predecessors, changed the world around them. Fascinated, Umemis watched them struggle in the wilderness, struggle to conquer the world they sat so precariously on. They thought, like him, considering themselves in a manner that Umemis had thought only he did. Perhaps…
He settled down near a group of them and took a shape similar to theirs. Male, female, it did not matter. He would not solve, no, that was not his place. But to help such magnificent creation, that he could do. He gave them fire instead and then let them solve its intricacies. They mastered it and then used its power to dominate the world.
Umemis was unsettled by this. They had taken his gift and used it far more than he could have anticipated. Lightness. Subtlety. Those would be his guiding words. These peoples were too young, to inexperienced to be left alone. They would need help, but not oversight; guidance, but not control.
That is what Umemis would devote his time to. Their planet and sun would not last long; he would have to make the most of what little time Life had. Guidance. Subtlety. He changed forms many times, shedding and regaining lives as the years wore on and the sentient life on the small planet grew and changed, created and destroyed. Umemis waited, watched and helped.
It would only take a few aeons before they were gone.
