I can understand a joke going over like inflatable metal, even when it's obvious. It happens to me a lot. :p

But animal abuse? That doesn't really make sense, unless someone didn't understand what hobby horses are and how they're made. Typical insane troll logic, I guess. :\

A strong possibility. They really haven't been in vogue for a few decades, so teens and many young adults probably aren't all that aware of them.
