A mega commission for a good friend on FA, featuring Krystal's journey to a quick adulthood in a familiar place.  Story written by commissioner.

-------------------------

1.
Krystal stepped out of her hut and into the center of the village in which she lived. After taking a deep breath, she started to go forth, when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

“Going for a walk then, Krystal?” a gentle female voice asked.

“Yes, Mum;” said Krystal, “I’m going to see if the river is full yet.” Krystal’s mother, Aliea, smiled and said,

“It ought to be after the rain we had for the past two days. I’m guessing you’re happy to get out of the hut.”

“I sure am;” said Krystal, “When would you like me back?”

“Just try to be back before two;” said Aliea, “I don’t want your lunch to go cold.”

“I’ll do that, Mum.” said Krystal.

“And remember…” added Aliea, “Don’t cross the river alone.”

“I won’t!” Krystal promised as she bounded off, “I love you, Mum!”

“I love you too, my little warrior!” Aliea called after her daughter. Krystal exited the village and was soon walking along the path that she knew led to the river. The sun was in the sky, Cernia’s fauna chirped around her, and the little vixen couldn’t be happier.

2.
Krystal made good time getting to the river; she knew she had training later today, and wanted to get in as much fun time as she could first. Her ears perked up as she heard the unmistakable sound of running water, and she picked up her pace. When she reached the bank of the river, her eyes went wide.

“Wow!” she exclaimed; the river was indeed full; perfect for going for a swim. Krystal loved swimming; her father had actually taught her to swim before she knew how to walk, and with the river full from a good rainfall, it was a perfect day to take a swim. Krystal wasted no time darting into a bush and undressing herself.

3.
Just a minute later, Krystal emerged from the bushes wearing only a black one-piece bathing suit. She had left her clothes concealed in the bushes so no creature could find and/or snitch them. There was a fallen tree on her side of the river, and in Krystal’s mind at least, it made the perfect diving platform. The young vixen ran over to the log, and gently climbed onto it; being mindful to keep herself from getting splinters in her feet.

4.
Krystal took a moment and got herself situated on the center of the log. She then gazed at the land across the river; a land forbidden to younger children as it was home to some of Cernia’s more unpleasant residents. Admittedly, there were days when Krystal wondered just what could be beyond the forest on the other side, but that could wait until she was older. Besides, being allowed to play here, on the border of a forbidden land; that had enough of a rebellious tone to it for her. Krystal then thought just about how wonderful her life was; she had a good home, loving parents, wonderful friends, and she was training to be a warrior; and someday she would make her mother and father really proud of her. With all this in mind, Krystal took one final breath, and started to run along the log towards the water.

5.
At the edge of the log, Krystal pushed off the solid surface with her legs and pulled them close to her body.

“YEE-HOO!!” she cried as she leapt over the water. Then… KER-SPLASH!!! She plunged into the cool waters of the river. The chill quickly engulfed her body with a pleasant shock; Krystal couldn’t stop herself from smiling as she sank to the bottom

6.
Krystal allowed herself to sink all the way to the bottom of the river. Thankfully, she was quite skilled at holding her breath. Her entire body was surrounded by the pleasant chill of the river; all she could hear was the gentle rumble of running water; for just that one minute… nothing else in the world seemed to matter…

7.
Finally, Krystal felt her lungs burning with the desire for oxygen. She pushed off the bottom and shot straight to the surface. Upon breaching the surface and re-entering the warmth of the air, Krystal took in a huge breath, refilling her lungs with clean oxygen. This was her favorite place to be; shoulder deep in the cool, clear waters of the river. But this time, something was just… different…

8.
Krystal sighed; the kind of somber sigh that one usually makes when they are feeling deep pain but do not want to show it. Even now it was hard to believe that her entire planet had survived the cataclysm that she was sure would end up destroying it. What was most depressing of all was that even though the planet was intact, there was no sign of any kind of living creatures apart from the flora. When she had arrived, Krystal hadn’t seen hide nor hair of any of her kind; and the village where she used to live was nothing more than a deserted lake valley with broken pieces of huts and buildings strewn around it. Krystal suddenly heard a giggle. At first there was a small glimmer of hope, but as she looked up, all that hope faded away. She saw the silhouette of a young vixen materialize before her; and she knew exactly who it was… A ghost of her former self; just a carefree, happy-go-lucky cub with a happy life, and no idea that the world she knew was about to come to an end. Krystal couldn’t help but shed a tear as she remembered how happy she had been her youth; and yet… at the same time, there was at least one comforting thought. When Krystal had visited all the places she knew during her trip here, she hadn’t found a single vulpine corpse, or even traces of bones. That could only mean that even if they weren’t here, perhaps her friends and loved ones had managed to escape to somewhere where they could be safe from the cataclysm.

9.
Krystal finally settled in her mind that however small the chance may be that some or at least one of her kind had managed to survive… the chance was there. What was more, she had become a great warrior; the first lieutenant of the legendary Starfox team; a feat that surely would have made her mother and father very proud of her. Deciding not to dwell on it as long as she was here, Krystal floated up onto her back and allowed the current of the river to take her as she drifted lazily downstream. She let out another sigh; the kind one usually makes when they are finally at peace of mind and at ease. More so than ever before, Krystal was proud to be who she was.
