It's no more a continuation or sequel of the original Thundercats as Dark Souls is related to Demon's Souls (sorry if you don't get the video game reference). That is to say, it is in fact a retelling.

Im pretty sure its supposed to be a "continuation" from the old Thundercats. Because, in the premiere, they said they are on Third Earth. Now, in the original series, Third Earth is where they crash land after fleeing into the stars. And they also say that the Thundercats are old legends, and the predecessors of their race. So, yea. Its like a continuation. But using the same names on completely different characters.
