last year, and I was determined to record it this year as a tribute to him. Also because I love finding out about Christmas traditions from around the world.
Las Posadas is celebrated in Mexico from December 16th to the 24th, in most places. Where Paco lives, it is celebrated from the 12th, right after the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is why I released it today. It is usually celebrated with an re-enactment of the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay. This song is usually sung during that re-enactment.
Las Posadas literally means The Shelters. The words detail the journey of the Holy Couple from Inn to Inn, trying to find a place to stay. The lyrics, roughly translated, are these:
In the name of heaven I ask you for shelter, for my beloved wife can go no farther.
This is not an inn Get on with you, I can not open the door, you might be a rogue.
Do not be inhuman, Show some charity, God in heaven will reward you.
You may go now and don't bother us anymore because if I get angry I will beat you.
My wife is Mary. she is the Queen of Heaven, she will be mother to the Divine Word.
Is that you Joseph? Your wife is Mary? Enter pilgrims I didn't recognize you.
May the Lord reward you for your charity, and may the sky be filled with happiness.
Happy home, harboring on this day the pure virgin, the beautiful Mary.
Enter holy pilgrims, pilgrims receive this corner not this poor dwelling but my heart.
