Well, look at the time on the phone. 10:24PM In page 2, the jogger says "afternoon" so you can assume it's anywhere between 12PM and 5PM. The sun isn't setting or on the horizon, so you can assume it's not as late as 5PM when he goes for said walk. In writing stage for this comic, I decided it would be about 2PM when they get out of the car, so 8 hours is a long time to disappear for. Besides, he's a teen, and it's late. every parent gets worried when they don't know where their child is (First hand experience on that one XP Didn't end well...) You might also remeber in page 2 he said he'd get his stuff when he got back. Not at this hour!
