Monsterville's Main Characters
Here is a mock screen capture of Monsterville in play to show how the display looks like.

the green box on the top-left is the time box. It shows the date in year/month/day format, the time in hour:minute:second format, the day of the week and has an " *Events* " button which takes you to your calendar and schedule so you can check up on upcoming events in the game such as character's birthdays, prearranged outings and work hours for your jobs or when certain shops are open. Different shops and businesses are available at different times of the day or on certain days of the week so remember to keep track of events.

the blue box on the top-right is the notice box. It will alert you to important things such as collecting or losing items, unlocking or losing achievements and important events being soon or missed.

the green box at the top-center is your general stats. "Hydrat" says how hydrated you are. If it gets too low you might get ill from thirst. "Nutrien" says how much nutrients you have. If it gets too low you might get ill from hunger. "Money" says how much money you have available to you right now. If it's lower than the amount an item costs you can't buy it but going to work will earn you more money so you can buy it later. "Energy" says how long you can stay awake in hours:minutes format. Time your sleeping patterns well to make the best out of your day. "No.1" says how much you need to do a number 1. If you don't use the toilet before it gets too high you will get ill. "No.2" says how much you need a number 2. Like number 1's if you don't go to the toilet before it gets too high you will get ill.

the blue colored box second from the top in the middle is the completion box. "Achievs" says how many achievements you currently have. You can get achievements by performing certain tasks in the game. The ultimate goal of the game is to gather all the achievements. The " *Achievs* " button will take you to a menu where you can observe all the achievements in the game including information on how to get them and which ones you currently have. "Items" says how many of the game's items you have collected at some point throughout your play. If you lose an item it doesn't reduce the percentage, you simply have to have had it at least once. The " *Items* " button takes you to a menu showing all the game's items and which you have had. It also shows you what items you currently have on you. "Scenes" tells you how many scenes you have watched. You only need to watch them once and then you can watch them at any time via the gallery. Try everything to find all the scenes in the game. The " *Options* " button takes you to the options menu where you can change setting, save, load or quit the game, view the gallery, read character information and other info about the world Monsterville is set in.

The six pink colored boxes which are dangling from the green and blue section at the top are the character info boxes. Above your character the "Total%" tells you the total percentage of completion you have acquired whilst playing as this character out of the total amount of things you can achieve specifically with this character. Above other characters "Complet" tells you the amount of completion you have achieved from interacting with that character. You can only get a small percentage from most characters that interact with them but a character who shares a special relationship with them like a lover or family member can achieve much more. It is spread throughout all the characters which you can play as so don't try to interact too much with someone your character doesn't have a special relationship with as you wont get far. "Life" tells you the total health of the character whether it's the one you are playing as or someone else. If a character's "Life" drops too low they will die but don't worry they will respawn again. Killing people is a bad thing so it's not a good idea. You will get arrested and get a game over. You should only kill bad guys who want to kill other people.

The big pink box at the bottom is the dialogue box. At the top-left of the box it will tell you your current location. In the top middle of the box are the buttons " *Use* ", " *Examine* " and " *Communicate* ".

The " *Use* " button opens up the "Inventory" menu where you can choose an item to use. After that you are given the option to use the item against other items in your inventory, on objects in your environment or on the people in the room. Some items need to be used on each other to make other items you might need like a lens and a handle makes a magnifying glass. Some objects in a room need certain items to do what you want them to do like an orange used on a juicer makes orange juice. And sometimes people might need items for you to get them to do things for you like a smith might need a block of wood and a blueprint to make a staff for you.

The " *Examine* " button opens up a menu where you are asked whether you want to examine an item in your inventory, something in the room or a person. Examining an item can give you useful information about it like clues as where you can use it. Examining the room will tell you about what people and objects are in it so you know where to look for items or who to talk to. Examining a person will tell you things about their appearance or personality that might be helpful to know.

The " *Communicate* " button enables you to talk to other characters. It will first ask you who you want to talk to and then what topic you would like to talk about. You can find out useful information by talking to people especially about that person or the person they have a special relationship with. Different people also have different knowledge depending on their occupation or hobbies. Asking a smith about how to repair something makes sense as they often do that in their job, asking a soldier about how to farm crops for example is probably not a good idea. Some topics might be too personal to someone you barely know, you wouldn't ask your tailor what their partner likes to eat for example, unless you knew the tailor personally. People also respond differently depending on whether they are working or off work. You wouldn't start up a deep conversation with someone while they are working but in their free time they would be more open to lengthy dialogue. Likewise it's best to ask a person about their work while they are at work as they will have everything to hand.

The main portion of the big pink box at the bottom displays the text during scenes and the multiple choice buttons. When walking around it shows buttons that take you to other rooms. Depending on whether you are using an item, examining something or communicating with someone the text in the box will change into dialogue or multiple choice buttons specific to what you are doing. This is where you will be mostly focusing on during gameplay but be sure to keep an eye on the rest of the display so as not to let your stats get too high or low, whether you receive an important notice or your completion stats change.

I had concerns about such a complex hud when we were teetering on the edge of the sprite limit but thanks to everyone we just managed

i thought we had room until i realized we needed multiple sprites per character preloaded in each state. good job you for making it work. you're a better man than i
