One can't react rationally to a surprise encounter if one has been shocked out of the rational part of the brain (great for thinking, lousy for dealing with immediate threats to survival) and into their reptilian hindbrain (literalist, relatively stupid, but more survival-oriented than the rational brain). We can't help be idiots when we're literally out of our minds with fear.
