It is a bit of a tossup for me. When comparing something like the animals in Avatar, or the more cartoony Bolt, I have a hard time. They both look great! to me, both in their own ways.
Though I think on a personal project standpoint, I think cartoony will be easier to develop. And you are right, as appealing and amazing as a top notch Live Action Film look of things as seen in Star Wars, the cartoony look of things like Over The Hedge is a bit more fun to see. ^.^
