The unplanned organism is a question asked by nature and answered by death. You are a different kind of question, with a different kind of answer.
- Morpheus (Deus Ex)
This picture was part of my Eurofurence 22 Art Show portfolio. It was available as a single limited canvas print.
Where to start with this one... I can definitely say that this picture is one of the most complex ones I have drawn to this very day. The sheer amount of warping and twisting of the original idea into the finished picture, but also the extensive research and obsessive control of details that went into the process of drawing this made it a challenge on its own.
I started working on this at the beginning of June. I was looking forward to start with my set of pictures dedicated to the Eurofurence art show, because the Back to the 80s theme was a great source of motivation. I could come up with concepts that were directly influenced by the cons theme and it definitely shows in this picture.
My first steps were to collect reference pictures from various inspiration sources. Games like Deus Ex and Hotline Miami, movies like Blade Runner or Drive, or even books like Neuromancer. It was a great culmination of everything I loved about Cyberpunk and the colorful 80s aesthetics with their neon lights and cool ideas for futuristic settings.
Originally I wanted to have three character patrolling in a dark back alley, with a grim oppressive atmosphere, blimps with spotlights in the sky, shouting down slogans like in Blade Runner. But I felt I was wasting potential with that sort of scenario and started to redesign it. The original idea still stands, but now it's a colorful urban environment, at the verge between contemporary and futuristic. I felt it was a good trade off, to have recognizeable parts that are clearly based in present day, like the weapons, the subway, etc. but then add elements of cyberpunk and sci-fi to the mix to find an "in between" look.
The characters changed throughout the drawing process quite a bit. Originally I wanted the main character to be a white tiger, but felt it would stand out with its bright fur too much for it to work properly. Eventually I just said "Fuck it, I'll make it my own character." but tried to give him unique features, like the cybernetic arm or the barcode stripe on the shoulder. The rhino started out in full combat gear, with a gas mask helmet, which was gradually removed until only the goggles remained. In part he is inspired by the character Gunther Hermann from Deus Ex - mainly his stature reflects that. The shark character was the most straightforward design. Since I had been struggling with the other two characters so much, I kept his design simple but effective, with the glowing red eye drawing all the attention.
Eventually, it took me one whole week to finish this picture, but I have enjoyed every second of it. I am very happy with the final result and would like to thank the person, who purchased it at the EF art show. :3
Daaaaaammnnnn!!! Better than anything I'll do! I do see Deus Ex in it because of the arm, but I also saw partially Advanced Warfare, but it doesn't look natural enough to go with it entirely.
