Yea, Knuckles' genealogical tree from the savants who first launched the Floating Island where Echidna people lived, was well documented. Then, thanks to Penders, all that was tossed. That was NOT why I ditched Sonic. I ditched him some years earlier, when Sally broke off her bethrothal to Sonic because he refused to stop being a Freedom Fighter.(She could not accept him risking his life anymore, not after he was "tossed" in space for a year, and then getting his arm injured in that battle with Robotnik.)issue 135 or so. I cancelled my sub then. Too many characters. Too many changes.
I recall Dimitri's losing his power -and then rapidly aging- when Mogul raped it from him. I have the issues of Sonic where that happened.

I heard a lot of people rage-quit the series when that happened, I often heard it called "the slap heard round the world." I hated it too of course, in fact it was the shit cherry on top of the sewage sunday that was the comic's worst arc in its entire run. (Some say that was the worst issue of the comic, but I think one of the issues in the arc leading up to it was WAY worse.) Of course it was done to preserve the status quo of Sonic being single (because ending a beloved canon ship after decades to make the MC seem more like a child always works out SO well, just ask Spiderman!) But I stuck with it and shortly after that Penders was replaced with Ian Flynn who rapidly worked at fixing the damage Penders had done over his last years running the show, but even then it took nearly 100 issues for Sonic and Sally to repair the damage to their relationship.
It's funny, the Knuckles comic ended after barely over 30 issues because Penders was turning it into a convoluted drama full of relationship BS and political intrigue, it was like the Star Wars Prequels of the Sonic Universe, I don't think he ever fully recovered from the fan's rejection of what he was certainly hoping was his magnus opus, and stuff like the BS love triangle between Sonic, Sally, and Mina, Antoine and Bunnie breaking up, and finally that infamous public break-up between Bunnie and Sally was his attempt at retaliation.
