I went and saw the Angry Birds movie last Tuesday and I must admit, it wasn't too bad, in fact, I'd say it was fairly decent, especially considering it's a video game movie adaptation. lets go into more detail

Story: It focuses on our main character Red who, for most of his life, has been treated very poorly by the people of the island he lives on. When things go too far during a job he was tasked with, he is sentenced to Anger management where he meets his fellow companions. during this, the pigs from a further away country invade and want to be friends just in order to steal the birds eggs. Now its up to Red and his fellow Angry Birds to stop them. Now as far as stories go, this one a pretty cliché and nothing all that more innovative, and you'd be right, we have seen this kind of thing before. One thing that I think the film would have benefited from was explaining why Red became a wreck of a character. sure, they do explain it in a few sequences, but it doesn't help us dive much into the character as a whole and leaves it feeling kind of shallow.

Character: Red (Jason Sudeikis, Horrible Bosses) is our main character who suffers from being an ass do to how the island has treated him and nobody wants to trust or believe in him. Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Tropic Thunder) is the sort of laid back idiot of the group who, when provoked can get a bit "Explosive" Chuck (Josh Gad, Olaf from Frozen) is very hyperactive and fast wanting to do things as fast as possible. Leonard (Bill Hader, Cloudy with a Chance of MeatBalls, Inside Out) is the leader of the pigs and tries to befriend the birds in order to steal their precious eggs. As stated above, this film should of really delve deeper into what makes Red so angry. only a snipit of scenes at the beginning of the film show this, but none are really explaining why. like "why was Red left at the Lost and Found" "Why didn't he have any parents?" "What happened to his parents" "Why did the kids make fun of him having thick eyebrows" These probably would have made us appreciate Red more as the main character. As for the others, their sort of a comic relief thing, in fact, were supposed to view all of the characters with a perspective of being funny. The film doesn't lend itself to diverse character emotion like Zootopia and you're just suppose to go along with all the wacky antics of the characters, and I think they did a fair job for the most part, it just could have helped to have some more things explained about Red.

Animation: If theirs one thing this film did right was it's animation. Sure, all the characters have feet and arms, but I think it helps benefit the overall tone of the film and gives some much more needed character expressionism. plus, it was a decision from the main studio who created the games, Rovio, so you can't fault them. Other then that, they were able to get the character designs to transition well into their new designs without losing what made these characters recognizable in the franchise they star in. and the environments look very pretty too. ranging from luscious island to giant city with a fortress. The animators over at Sony Pictures Imageworks certainly know how to do animation perfectly. Now if they could only tell Sony Pictures Animation how to do their animation properly.

Music: Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me 1 and 2 and Smurfs) lends his musical cues to this film and for the most part, he does an admirable job ranging from twangy music to oddly technological riffs that would otherwise fit nicely in the Despicable Me movies, which makes sense considering (read parentheses above)

In conclusion, I found this movie to be a 7 out of 10. Sure it does have countless flaws, but it makes up for with some nice animation, funny characters and a big finale that brings the spirit of Angry Birds to the big screen. This one may be hard to sell to adult, but I think kids would get a kick out of it, as well as some Angry Birds fans.
