If you travel north of Humilau City in Unova, following a lone highway that hasn't seen traffic in decades, you will happen upon the ruined city of Sanctus. Before Castelia expanded into the metropolis that it is today, Sanctus functioned as Unova's center of operations. It was situated on the coast and saw its fair share of beach goers and tourism. However, this was all decades ago.
In addition to its coastal position, Sanctus was also set dead center in the path of numerous tsunamis and typhoons. The locals had built barriers to protect their home from the constant barrage. Now in their defense, the storms had not started until long after the city was first built. They used to be rare occurrences but have only recently amped up in frequency and severity. Still, the inhabitants were vigilant in their attempts to keep their city safe. That would only do so much good for so long.
Eventually, a series of high tidal waves bombarded the coastal city, as if the sea itself wanted to swallow it whole. Water levels rose by dozens of feet within minutes. High rise buildings. Apartment complexes. Suburban homes. Everything was either washed away or destroyed beyond repair. Thousands of people lost their lives in the chaos. The few that survived finally wisened up and deemed the area unfit for human habitation. From here, the history of Sanctus City ends. Its remains left to crumble and collapse into its new aquatic grave. But just because its original creators and inhabitants are gone, doesn't mean other life hasn't persevered.
Soon after the city's abandonment, numerous water type pokemon began to migrate to the flooded metropolis. Chief among the new occupants was a large group of oshawott, dewott and samurott, all led by a clan of silver eyed samurott. It is here that Mei-lin's story begins.
Mei-lin is the daughter of a powerful silver eyed chieftain named Raizu. He was a stern and fearless leader, with over a dozen offspring to his name. A descendant of the original clan that came to the city, he held a policy of superiority and dominance over others, as well as shunning away outsiders.
Raizu had named Mei-lin to be next in line when he died the day she hatched, saying he sensed the spirit of a powerful warrior within her. However, things took a surprise turn as she matured and discovered a strange power: the ability to freely manipulate ice. Her father and the rest of the clan were perplexed as to the origins of her power, some going so far as to say she is a curse from the outside world. Life for the little oshawott went downhill after that. She was put under strict surveillance and only allowed to go out at certain times of day. She was treated more like a prisoner than one of the family. Needless to say, when a strange froslass appeared one day with the offer to take her away and help hone her ice powers, she leapt at it with earnest. A short meeting with her father took place, where he eventually agreed to let his daughter leave their home. Who knows what this new life in the outside world will take her? Only time will tell.
