So... is she an engram (copy of consciousness) or a brain-in-a-box?

A little of a and b i suspect though less brain in a box more soul in a box, if her brain was still in there they could have transplated the horn, or hell her whole skull along with it conections intact the fact she mentions her horn is an ornament indcates this is not what they did...so i suspect they built the body then used magic to transfer and bind her soul to it...kinda like alphonse in full metal alchemst just a bit more complicated, weather vava will confirm or deny that soon i cant say.
