Man, I remember how fun that game was. Pity it never seemed to catch on over where I live, since the music is absolutely amazing and the X patterened pads offer a lot more with the game over DDR and ITG's cross/plus sign four pad pattern.

Yeah, I remember watching some of the mid-2000's world competition videos and it was difficult keeping my jaw off the floor with the routines some of the guys were performing. Once you figure out what kind of flow the song's steps are aiming for, I always found Pump It Up to be a lot more... Invigorating.
Never did get into it as competitively as I did with DDR, and especially ITG... Still can't believe just how quiet the room got (with something like 35 people crammed into it!!!) at one competition when the random song selector picked Vertex^2, because everyone in that room knew I had been fighting over the high score board with the person I was competing with then and there for over a month... I lost by half a percent, but both of us were quite happy to be able to "settle" the rivalry right then and there in an actual competition (she wound up getting 2nd overall in that particular tournament, if I remember correctly). I've never seen a room at a competition be that quiet for sooooo long, especially for such a well known (at least for the area) rivalry. .....Even the owner of the establishment (a really nice pool hall in Calgary, AB, Canada) made some of the pool customers wait because he wanted to see how it ended!

DDR (and In the Groove) were just up down left and right, whereas Pump it Up went with the X pattern as it mimicks real life dancing styles more - for lack of a better word - naturally. DDR did have two versions that had diagonal arrows as well though - Solo, and Solo 2000, which added in an up-left and an up-right arrow to the mix.
Pump It Up (aka Pump, or PIU) has a TON of K-pop in it due to being a Korean game, and arguably has more die hard fans due to the increased technical skills required to play it, and there are still yearly freestyle competitions done on the various Pump machines.
The Diagonal arrows do throw you for a loop, and take a while to be able to pick up though - I could do Heavy 9's on DDR (Max2 and Extreme Arcade) and even Heavy 8's on double but I usually would struggle with Medium 7's on pump due to the sheer changes in footwork you needed on Pump. I only ever did try out Exceed though, since machines just weren't that popular where I lived.
