I have a strange relationship to the word "fancy" and to money in general.

If it was up to me, we wouldn't have money at all - it's kind of silly, isn't it? XD I mean, it's supposed to represent "merit" (whatever that means) in terms of what we deserve to get in return, yet people not only get and give money for reasons most of us may not ascribe the same value to, but the very same products aren't worth the same amount in different places or times. I started out closer to upper middle class, but the previous decade has seen me far more accurately described as lower, not that I think I deserved it more then than now, or that I deserve it less now than then.

At first I wasn't sure I liked being called fancy - would it be taken to mean I was luckier than I really was? Or that I thought I deserved better than others? Still, both Flipp and Zanian casually use "fancy" to mean "classy" or "impressive" somehow (that is some fancy swag!), and have taken to referring to me as such endearingly, in a way I became increasingly fond of. It makes me chuckle, because it makes me think about Iggy Azelea and that video of Obama singing "Fancy," or Jimmy James having "fancy plans and pants to match." It came to symbolize just that little extra you still somehow manage to get, when you've struggled long enough to finally have a bit put aside, that for a moment you get to pretend you're not poor, and indulge like everyone should be able to, because why not? ^^
