Arelia stood there stunned and confused as the rest of the girls ushered Taybra away toward the house. Before she could fully collect herself to follow, she saw Lucas walking up the path looking at the group. He seemed deep in thought as he was most of the time. As he got closer, he looked up at her longingly. Arelia blushed, slightly embarrassed but also excited that she finally was receiving the wolf boy’s attention the way she wanted. "Hey," he greeted her. "Hey..." Arelia meekly responded. It seemed like a weak comeback, but she didn't know what else to say. “I've been thinking a lot lately... and I’ve been a fool,” Lucas stated dejectedly. Arelia opened her mouth to disagree, but Lucas finished what he was saying. “I met a girl over the summer,” he stated matter-of-factly. Arelia paused, a little hurt and worried that Lucas was bringing up another girl to her. Her heart sank as she thought about how hopeless things were for her. “She was cute, and fun, but really she was just looking for someone to fill her time like I was. Now, she’s back in Canada and I’ve been all caught up in something that never could have worked. And while I was doing that... I missed something wonderful that was right in front of me.” He blushed. Arelia felt her throat go tight from the tension. She tried to swallow as he slowly shifted uncomfortably. “What I’m trying to say is… do you want to go out on a date sometime?” He blushed furiously, giving her a big smile full of hope. Stunned speechless, she stood there slack-jawed and wide-eyed. The words that came from his mouth were the last thing she expected after everything that had happened that night. She looked at him, his blue eyes gleaming in the moonlight, as his white fur seemed to glow angelically. The moment felt like some kind of dream. She had practiced for this moment ever since she found out that he didn’t have a girlfriend. But it all failed her when the time came. She swallowed hard at the lump in her throat as she nearly whispered, “Y-yes,” more questioningly than she had intended. At that moment she wanted to reach out and touch him, hold his paw, anything to just be sure the moment was real. But she just stood there looking at him, unsure what she should do. "Can... c-can we kiss?" He asked. Arelia was dumbfounded as her mind questioned what her ears heard. Did he really ask if he could kiss her? Was this some kind of cruel joke? Was everyone just waiting for her to try before they all jumped out to humiliate her? She was struck by the shy sincerity in his eyes, something she could not remember seeing in her father’s. It felt as if the world around her faded, leaving the two of them in limbo together. She had waited so long for that moment, and now she couldn’t move or speak. Her entire body failed her at the one moment she needed it. She felt dizzy as she reached forward and grabbed ahold of his paw. It felt as if her heart stopped as she closed her eyes, stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his. She felt her heart flutter back to life as his warm, soft lips pressed back against hers. It was like nothing she had ever felt before as she held the simple kiss, her first kiss, and the first of what was, she hoped, many more to come. |
