Don't they differ only by outfits, hairstyle and colouring?  I'm tend to think that most people prefer to draw in anime style just cause its easy since you draw same body/anatomy & same face on any character without thinking that, should her eyes be bigger or smaller, close or away from each other, should her mouth be small or wide, what shape the nose should have to make this character look different.
With all the characteristic of facial features omitted or simplified, all characters become blandly cute to the point it's just simply boring & cheesy, no matter that a pic might look pretty complex & the artist spent hours or days making it.
Artists who prefer anime style usually keep circling one & the same without being able to go away from their usual stuff & draw in a way that a random person won't be able to tell that characters A & B are drawn by one artist because those have nothing in common.
