On Tuesday I went and saw Norm of the North and let me tell you, I was not surprised in the least. It's dull, boring, unimaginative, and just plain stupid. I shall tell you why.
Story: Ok, get this, the story involves Norm, a Polar Bear who can talk to humans like his Grandfather. It's never explained why, but no one should care. (about this movie) anyways, humans want to move to Antarctica (though I have no fucking clue why) and Mr. Greene wants to sell it off with his mobile home investment. So Norm goes to New York with his Lemming friends to try and convince the humans (by entering in an audition for a Polar Bear) to not move to his home. All I can say is that this film has this sort of "Madagascar" Whereas it's trying to be Madagascar, but not really trying to, that honor would go to The Wild (which is a far much better film then this one) The story idea almost feels like its trying to be an environmental kind of film, but not so much. no mention of global warming and the likes so, that's a plus? but all in all, the story is just not all that good and pretty stupid when you think about it.
Characters: Oh jeez, where do I begin? they are complete idiots for the most part. Norm (Rob Schneider. Wow, is he even still relevant?) is a Polar Bear with a special gift to talk to humans. No explanation so shut up. He is tasked to go to New York and try to sell the artic but to turn it around to save the artic. Socrates (Bill Nighy, Davy Jones, Rattle snake Jake) is supposed to be the sort of old wise seagull character, but he doesn't appear much in the film. Very (Heather Graham) is the spokesperson for the villain, Greene whereas she is also trying to help get her daughter into a special school. She's kind of dumb since she can't tell Norm from Norm all because she was "attacked" by him in the artic, not to mention heard his voice before, and he comes to audition and yet, doesn't recognize him as being more real then the other auditioneers. And then their is Mr. Greene (Ken Jeong) He's probably one of the redeeming factors of the film. He is the villain, but can be quite the pansy in the long run. He runs his apply named business and can be quite the flexible moving character similar to the villain Chester V from Cloudy 2. To put it bluntly, these characters don't have a lot going for themselves in the way of deep personality and originality.
Anmation: Now I will admit, I have seen some awful animation in my day (Food Fight) but this film is not one of them, but it still doesn't mean its good either. The CGI is pretty basic and doesn't really try anything new with the medium, they're are hardly any special effects for things like water or snow which you think they would do considering the films theme. The human animated characters are so butt ugly to look at that they make the characters in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs look like Pixar animation while the animation for the animals is at best, Tolerable. This film is just to bland and iffy to look at.
Music: Its pretty generic and at times thought was trying to emulate How to Train your dragon or some shit like that. was scored by Stephen McKeon (The Flight Before Christmas) and doesn't really seem to get what score can do for a film. He might need some more practice. I mean, the man has won awards for some of his works, but they can't compare to something like How to Train your dragon or Spirit: stallion of the Cimarron.
My finale score for this film is a 3.5 out of 10. It's probably one of the worst films I have ever watched in my life. it is not the true worst in terms of all films around the world, but it certainly would make my bottom 10 worst animated films list. The story is just dull and idiotic, the villain's plan to build condoes in the artic is retarted (even the councel woman in the film called it Ludacris) the characters are just not that interesting, even the Lemmings are way too Minion-ish, and the animation, while not the most horrible looking, is pretty bad and not all that interesting. If you are in the least bit interested in checking this out, I'd say wait for the DVD release to rent it. Its not worth putting your money into. Such a shame too since its producer, Splash Entertainment (aka Mike Young Productions) was well known for their shows like Clifford: The Big red Dog, ToddWorld, and Jakers! The adventures of Piggly Winks.
