New IB version! Just a quick note.

Hi everyone

We're running a new version of Inkbunny.

There have been about 100 changes and bugfixes so there's a lot to go through when we finally get the changelog published (next journal, in a day or so!).

In the meantime there are some changes that will be immediately apparent. We'd like feedback and bug reports if you notice anything you'd like to bring to our attention.

Some notable changes

* What's with all this orange? The system now highlights the usernames of people you watch, in places where that distinction might be useful. The color and the places it does this are currently under live testing and will be improved as we get feedback.

* Thumbnails for submission uploads can now be any size (up to max full image size) as you upload them, and they'll get resized to 200x200. Previously they had to be 200x200 on upload or the system would reject them.

* When you change your email address in your Account Settings, or if we receive too many bounced emails when the system tries to email you, you will get a notification telling you to re-verify your email. If the re-verification process doesn't work or if it's too confusing, please let us know.

* The keyword and username autosuggest function has been updated in many ways. If it gives you any trouble, please let us know. The updates should make it faster and it should get out of the way more effectively when you don't need it.

* You can now send Private Messages instantly to any recipient from your Private Messages page. Just click the "New Private Message" link at the top and you can type a recipient name (which also autosuggests usernames as you type).

There's a zillion other changes, additions and bug fixes but we'll report in full detail on those soon!

Thanks

Really digging both the new pm straight from pm option, and the orange :D

Itd be cool if the colors for it were customizable, like if we could make people we dont follow red and people we do follow green and friends blue by something in the settings... Not a complaint, love the update! Just saying, with a customizable background & logo, why not stuff like this too?

This~
For me the orange color is too much 'attention asking' when browsing through IB. A green or blue color, or just a tint darker / brighter would be fine for me. But since that's personally, I would also opt for customization.  |=(:3

Yeah I'm thinking a different shade of blue from the regular "unwatched" users, or maybe something purple.

I noticed that you applied a change that turns the names of people watching me blue |=(:3

Nah blue or gray just means a regular name at the moment.

Username color should be optional. Orange looks awful with the site's green.
FlynnRausch

"...where that distinction may be useful."

Not useful on submission or notices portals, since those list ONLY people you are watching anyway.
FurRiffic

2nd that it isn't needed on those two pages.

Also it might not be needed on the search page if you do a search with a username, as you then already know of you (don't) watch someone.

I think green would be a better choice than orange since up until this point orange on this site has meant "No no." as used in the -unwatch and -unfriend buttons. Also highlighting friends in purple would be a good feature.

I'm all ready liking the orange added to the user names. it makes it a lot easier to read and find their names so its thumbs up to IB from me for that and the rest of the changes look like their gonna be a big help as well. ^^_

I do have an idea for small addition to the orange names bit, can we have something to distinguish between "friends" and people we watch? like a padlock next to their name or something

If I notice any bugs I'll report them

I especially like the highlighting of accounts I watch! It's a nice touch and something I've been wanting from sites like IB. =)

Nooooooooooooooooo! The site now artificially restricts the width of the New Submissions page. So instead of seeing a browser window full of submissions, now I see 12 in the middle, with space for 6 more wasted as a grey strip down either side.

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please PLEASE put this back the way it used to be.

And while you're at it, remove the fixed-width shenanigans anywhere else you can. Monitors are a lot wider than they are tall these days.

This must be a bug with your browser, or you have turned off the expand mode. Make sure you click "expand" in the top right of any gallery view if it's not in wide screen mode.

Question.... it's called INKBunny, right? Do you think we could get one of the bunnymascots to be holding a pen, instead of a brush? Some writer love. Just a thought.

The heck? I didn't even know that was an option. I certainly don't remember ever turning it on in the first place, though. Huh.

Anyway, that was indeed the issue. THANK you!

Thank you for the new PM dealie. And omfg thank you for the thumbnail autosizer (o)_(o) I am irrationally super-pleased with this.

About the name color, I appreciate the differentiation, but my peculiar brand of color deficiency loses the orange a bit in the "title banner" section's color.

Thanks, y'all!

First off, I don't mind the orange, actually- One of my favourite colours... :)
Secondly, thumbnails... THANK GOD! It was a lot of trouble to find the right thumbnail image within the size restrictions as it were, or to go into an image editor just to resize an image just to use as a thumbnail for my stories! Great improvement!

Now, my only complaint, so far:
The MP3 player.
The scripts run slow on my older '01 iMac (OSX 10.4.11), and barely work at all on my 5-year-old iPod touch 2G- Even trying to load directly from the download link doesn't work much... This one's not quite ready for primetime, and is a step back from the old player. Please keep working out the kinks. :(

Hi

Do you have the latest version of flash player and latest version of the browser you are using?

S
dmfalk
5 years, 2 months ago
Apple's iOS doesn't support Flash- Never has, and never will. :( (Google's Android platform phased out Flash support last Summer, BTW.)

The last version for OSX 10.4.11 (PPC) was 10.something or 11.something, which I have.

Oh, sorry but we don't support iOS and IPhone based browsers. In theory they will drop back to HTML5 mode when viewing video and audio content on IB so that is totally beyond our control. If there's speed issues then it's the HTML5 implementation in your browser as all our player does is dump the video object to play in to your browser's native codecs.

The issues with OSX should be resolved if you update your Firefox. You are using a version that is 17 major versions older than current. Let me know if that doesn't help!

5 years, 2 months ago
iOS and Android both implement HTML5 (webapp standard, actually) and should work... But either freezes up or the file doesn't load when the QuickTime "Q" is displayed.

I can't do anything about Firefox, since I have an older computer, and buying something newer is not an option on my income. While it does load on my old iMac, in both Safari and Firefox, it's much slower now than the previous player.

(The previous player system worked well on both the iMac and iPod.)

You can't update to the latest Firefox? :O It should even ask to do that automatically when the new versions come out. The newest one should still run on the oldest computers.

Sounds like HTML5 is handing off the video playing capability to Quicktime so there's nothing we can do, sorry. All I can suggest is updating to the latest version of that too if possible!

The last version for my computer is 3.6.something.. I think .14, not sure. It's only been security maintenance updates, with the last one several months ago.

As I have a second-generation iPod touch, the last version of iOS that supported it was 4.2.1 (it's currently 6.1.something), and QuickTime is part of the OS core-- It normally handles MP3s and such fine, and has not been an issue at all until the change in players with the new version of IB-- The possibility here is the new player's scripts may not be handing off the file URLs correctly. Like I said, this was not a problem with the previous player setup, and so far, the only bugaboo I've encountered with the new IB system. (This also might account for the sluggishness that wasn't in the previous player's setup- It's worth investigating, though.)

I was advised some of these links might help with browser and QT support for older PCs:

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/43362/aurorafox
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
http://code.google.com/p/leopard-webkit/
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/43456/leopard-webkit

Sorry we can't help much more but old systems will likely start to run in to trouble like this as time goes on.

You can check the latest version of JWPlayer on their own site here (should be a demo vid on front of page) but that's just video. I'm not sure if they have MP3-only test pages on the site. http://www.longtailvideo.com/jw-player/

We use the same version so it should work (or not work!) the same there as it does here on IB, in theory!

*sigh* *shakes head* What I've been trying to say is there's something wrong with the script or scripts used, not the support of file playback in the browser itself! I have no problems playing MP3s and MP4s, even WAVs (if there are any here!), on either machine; the problem in the iPod is that the player is telling Safari to play to a file I suspect isn't properly linked- That is, a non-existent file! Similarly, in Safari on the iMac, almost immediately, with the current version of the player, a prompt pops up saying "Slow script", which means it's not getting a response from a link or element that it expects. These were not issues with the previous version of the player! I think the scripts should be inspected to see if they're properly linking files and URLs correctly, because the player either isn't finding what it needs to find, or the links aren't formatted correctly. This is not the fault of either the iPod or iMac, but something wrong with the current scripts that weren't there in the previous version- It was fine before the new update! :(

Hi, one of the IB staff who has a Mac was doing some testing and found that they had issues with  "jwpcdn.com blocked by noscript". So if you have any plugins in your browsers please disable them to see if any of them might be interrupting the media player.

I'll get them to do some more testing on ipad to see if we can find any common causes of media playback issues.

With the "slow script" issue, your PC is very out of date so new software is going to cause more and more problems as time goes on. The old JWPlayer we used may have been more compatible with older systems, but times are moving on and we want to use the new software that has perhaps dropped support for old systems. I have no way to test against the old versions of software and architecture you are using.

Incidentally, the video works fine from the JWPlayer site on my iPod (which I'm typing this response from, now).

I just noticed you mentioned "Even trying to load directly from the download link doesn't work much".

If you can't play the files directly then your device is not playing the raw MP3 files. They are the same files everyone is getting and playing fine, so this particular issue is not the embedded player we are using, as you have just proven.

All clicking "download" does is throw the raw URL of the MP3 file at your browser. It's then up to the browser and OS what it does with that file, which is beyond our control.

What happens if you save the file via the download link, and just try to play that file right on your device or desktop?

I like the idea of the orange, but, as another suggested, it would be nice to have customization, or even have the ability to disable it in the settings. I think a nice lighter shade of gray would work well for a color. As long as it doesn't blend into the background of course. X3

I like the orange, but from what I see it there's orange where there doesn't need to be orange. I like the fact that people who I'm watching on, say, the Popular Submissions page appear orange, but the fact everyone's orange in the New Submissions (by members you are watching) page feels kind of unnecessary since I'm already watching everyone.

Anyway, just a but of hopefully positive criticism. Keep up the good work, IB team!

Oooh, shiny. I like the orange.
Some distinction for friends would be nice, too (bold, maybe? Then watched friends would be bold orange, etc?)
